Take Breaks

Take Breaks One of the most helpful tips in keeping your eyes healthy as well as preventing computer eye strain is to give yourself breaks! Every half hour or so, spend some time taking your eyes off the screen and look out of the window at something, file papers, or just sit and close your eyes. Also, look at something close up as well as far away so you exercise your depth perception. Don’t forget to take your lunch away from your desk, also!

2

Blink

Blink A big part of eye health is to make sure to blink. It sounds silly, I know. Blinking is something we typically do involuntarily, but when you spend long periods of time reading or typing on a computer, you tend to blink less. Blinking also helps lubricate your eyes so if you have dry eyes, it’s even more important to make sure you blink and blink often!

3

Lubricate

Lubricate If you have dry eyes, in addition to blinking, utilize eye drops to keep your eyes moist. Having dry eyes can be really uncomfortable when the air conditioning is blasting or when the heater is in on full force in the winter. Keep a bottle of artificial tears close by so you don’t have to suffer through dry, irritated eyes all day while you work.

4

Adjust Your Workstation

Adjust Your Workstation It’s easy to suffer from eye strain when your workstation isn’t up to par! Make sure your computer monitor is adjusted to the appropriate height and distance from your chair. Also, make sure you have proper lighting and consider getting an anti-glare screen if glare is a problem. You can also look into adjusting the settings on the monitor to adjust the brightness and text size.

5

Use the 20-20-20 Rule

Use the 20-20-20 Rule The 20-20-20 rule advises us to look at something 20 feet away, for 20 seconds, every 20 minutes. Using this rule can help you remember to look away and give your eyes a rest while you’re working. Set a reminder on your calendar and eventually it’ll become a habit to take frequent breaks looking away from your monitor.

Exercise Your Eyes

Exercise Your Eyes We exercise our bodies for healthy bodies so it makes sense to exercise our eyes for optimal eye health! There are some simple eye exercises you can do right at your desk that can prevent eye strain and help improve your vision. Rolling your eyes clockwise then counter clockwise, blinking repeatedly and lightly pressing three fingers from each hand on the upper eyelid for a few seconds are all quick and simple ways to improve eye health.

7

Limit Computer Use

Limit Computer Use We spend many hours in front of a computer, so you would think that we’d limit our computer use off hours, but that’s not always the case! Even though we spend most of our workday on a computer, we still tend to spend a lot of time online outside of work on social media and other things. Try to limit the time you spend in front of a computer after work to give your eyes a break!

I hope these tips help you to take better care of your eyes and prevent computer eye strain! Eye strain can really affect your work and well-being, so it’s worth it to take the extra time and steps to help improve the situation. How do you take care of your eyes?
