However, for now, we're going to focus on medical conditions that can be cause by sleeping too much.

1

Diabetes

According to the WebMD, a recent study of 9,000 Americans showed a relationship between sleep and the risk of diabetes. It showed that people who slept more than 9 hours every night (and people who slept less than 5 hours) were at a 50% higher risk of having diabetes. Not that sleeping 9 hours will make you get diabetes, but it can simply raise your possibilities of getting it.

2

Obesity

According to the same study, research found that too much sleep could make you more apt to become obese over the course of 6 years. This 21% rate didn't change in people who ate a healthy diet and exercised! Meaning, even diet and exercise doesn't counteract the negative reaction your body has to too much sleep. If you want to watch your weight, watch the clock!

3

Headaches

Believe it or not, people who are prone to headaches, suffer from even more of them if they oversleep. Researchers think that this is because of the effect that oversleeping has on neurotransmitters in the brain, including serotonin. And too much sleep of a day and not much at night tends to give you more morning headaches!

4

Back Pain

Back in the "old days" if you had back pain, you were sent to bed. Now, it's just the opposite because too much bedtime can make that back pain worse! Instead, the way to ease pain in your back is to exercise and get active. Now, I don't recommend trying aerobics when having back pain, but there's nothing wrong with a good walk!

5

Depression

More depression cases are linked to insomnia, but about 15% of depression cases can be linked to too much sleep, and can actually make your depression worse. In some cases, they say sleep deprivation can actually help the recovery process to depression. Just be sure to talk to your doctor before making any choices like that.

Heart Disease

A healthy study involving 72,000 women showed that women who slept 9 to 11 hours every night were 38% more likely to have coronary heart disease that those that only slept 7 or 8 hours. However, the reason for this connection has not yet been found.

7

Death

It's scary to think about it, but it's been found that death rates are higher in people who sleep longer than 8 hours every night! They believe this could be the same linking factor as that of depression. I think this totally makes me rethink the idea of sleeping in!

After reading all this, I sure your thoughts on sleeping in has been changed. I know mine did! I never realized the importance of not sleeping too much! How long do you sleep every night?
