While there are a lot of habits that can affect your physical heath, there are also a few bad habits that damage your emotional health. People don’t usually pay attention to these habits because they often seem harmless. In the long term, they can really interfere with your happiness and they can also affect your well-being. Unhealthy psychological habits tend to pass unnoticed and we often don’t realize how damaging they are and how much they influence our perception on life in general. Just like Steve Goodier said: “We are stronger than we think. We have emotional, spiritual and even physical resources at our disposal. We may get knocked down, but we don’t have to stay down.” . Here are a few bad habits that damage your emotional health that you should be aware of:
1 We Are Our Own Worst Critics
One of the most common habits that damage your emotional health is that we are often our own worst critics. We tend to demoralize ourselves when we fail and we have too many unrealistic expectations regarding our goals. I’m not saying that you should lower your expectations; just don’t be so hard on yourself if you fail sometimes. Failure can actually be the best teacher you’ll ever have, so make sure you learn from your mistakes and try again. Be positive, work hard and I’m sure you’ll accomplish all your goals!
2 We Push People Away
Why do we tend to push people away when we are feeling lonely or sad? I do that from time to time and I don’t really think it helps. Loneliness makes us feel vulnerable and it also influences the way we see things. So, no matter if you’re feeling hurt or disappointed, just allow other people to help you or at least to be there by your side. You will feel stronger and I’m sure you will overcome more quickly all the obstacles you might encounter in your path if you just allow other people to get close to you.
3 We Don’t Apologize when We Should
People usually don’t like to admit when they are wrong, so they don’t apologize when they should. Even if you think that you are doing the right thing, you are actually wrong because you will feel overwhelmed with guilt in no time, especially if you let things go too far. If you want to avoid all potential conflicts and gain other people’s forgiveness, then just admit your mistakes and take responsibility for your actions. You might not like it but it’s the best thing to do in order to have a good emotional health and to protect your loved ones’ well-being as well.
4 We Sabotage Ourselves
We are often our own worst enemy because we tend to sabotage our happiness. We tell ourselves all kinds of negative things that usually affect our self-esteem and which decrease our self-confidence. We think that we are not worthy of certain privileges we earn and we don’t take enough credit for our victories. We often feel vulnerable and we tend to act accordingly, without being aware of our own strengths and abilities.
5 We Often Employ a Negative Internal Dialogue
We do we tend to be so negative when we talk to ourselves? Why can’t we be more positive, more oriented towards the future, more optimistic? People often tend to employ only a negative internal dialogue when they talk to themselves, a monologue that is very harsh, extremely punitive and which only decreases their self-worth. Just remember what a wonderful person you are and utilize your skills, your intelligence and your creativity more often, and you will see that there’s nothing you can’t overcome if you put your mind to it.
6 We Don’t Get Enough Sleep
If you think that sleep has nothing to do with your well-being, I must contradict you. Sleep is one of the things that contributes to a good emotional well-being, so try to get at least 7 or 8 hours of sleep every night in order to feel more energized, to see things more clearly and to avoid being cranky or irritable all day long.
7 We Don’t Eat Right and We Don’t Get Enough Exercise!
Eating right and exercising for at least 20 minutes every day will definitely improve your emotional well-being in the long term. If you eat the right foods you will feel more energized, more refreshed, you will see things in a more positive way and you will feel calmer. Also, by exercising on a regular basis, you will fight affective disorders like anxiety or depression because when you exercise, your body releases endorphins, which are actually nature’s best antidepressants.
There are a lot of things that we do on a regular basis that can affect our happiness, yet we don’t seem to notice them and we continue to sabotage ourselves.
