1. The Power of Now

The Power of Now is the literary version of Marmite. You either love it or you don’t, you either get it or you won’t. The author, Eckhart Tolle, is a spiritual teacher who shares with you how to dissolve past hurts and overcome anxieties about the future by living in the present moment. Tolle's work is so transformational that he did a 10 series special on the Oprah Show, explaining each chapter and how to apply the teachings to your life. The Power of Now filters effortlessly into every aspect of your life, one of the best self help books I have ever read and will continue to read over and over again.

2. F**k It

F**k It: The Ultimate Spiritual Way, by J.C.Parkin, is a refreshing take on living the life you want. As someone who over-analyses everything, F*ck It helped me let go of some of my unhealthy thought patterns and take a lighter look at life. A comical, yet liberating book all about getting right with you and saying f**k it to the rest, although maybe not the most PC approach. F**ck It is definitely one of the best self-help books out there.

3. The Alchemist

A book does not always have to be in the self-help section to have a positive effect on your life. That is why The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is on my list of best self-help books. Paulo Coelho weaves destiny, fate and spiritualism throughout this beautiful tale of a young boy’s journey to find treasure. If you feel like a bit of soul searching, and meaning amongst the madness, then The Alchemist will remind you of what really matters and how to get back to it.

4. Skinny Bitch

Some might not call this self-help, as it is actually a book about healthy eating. However, after reading Skinny Bitch by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin, my relationship with food changed completely. The straight up, no nonsense approach to food in Skinny Bitch has had a lasting, positive effect on my life, hence why it is one of the best self-help books that I have read.

5. Conversations with God

This may be a bit out there for some, but I have to mention it as one of the best self help books as this book provided me with far too many ‘ahhhh’ moments to ignore. I am not heavily religious, but I am open to anything that furthers my own spiritual growth. Conversations With God is about a man who has conversations with God. Are you still with me? In the book, the author Neil Diamond Walsh retells his conversations with the big guy and all the lessons he has to share. Whether these conversations actually took place is for you to decide, but all I know is that the messages in this book held some valuable truths for me. It’s all about why we are here, who we are and how we can fill our lives with more love and peace and less pain and stress. Now what woman doesn't want that?

6. The Miracle of Mindfulness

An extremely simple, yet beautifully powerful book, The Miracle of Mindfulness is undoubtedly one of the best self help books out there. Written by Thich Nhat Hanh (just try and say it) this short concise book shows you how to achieve present moment awareness through the most simplest of techniques. Thich Nhat Hanh applies ancient Buddhist teachings into modern day life. From washing the dishes to peeling an orange, after only a few weeks of putting his golden nuggets of advice into practise I felt more centred and calm than I ever had. Amen to that!

7. More to Life than Shoes

Although it is not as deep as some of the books I have mentioned, More To Life than Shoes is one of the best self help books for other reasons. Authors Nadia Finer and Emily Nash provide you with interviews from 100 women from different walks of life who have gone on to achieve the career of their dreams. It’s all about hearing how other women have succeeded and feeling energized to do the same. With tips for how to kick start your career and change your life- More to life than shoes left me proud to be a woman and excited to get started on making things happen!

The best self-help books inspire, motivate and encourage us to make the most out of our life situations. If you ever need a pick me up, or another way to looks at things - a good book can do wonders. Are there any books that you feel should be on this list that have made a lasting impact on your life?

Where Thoughts and Opinions Converge

I absolutely second The Alchemist. It's the perfect self-help book for people who hate reading self-help books because it's so easy to get lost in the story and not realize how much you are really learning until you've finished it. Highly recommended.

Many Lives, Many Master by Dr. Brian Weiss is a must read - it'll blow your mind.

I read The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People and loved it. There's also The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens.
