1

Just Count

Take advice from Jack Shepherd and count to five whenever you’re feeling scared. “I'd let the fear in, let it take over, let it do its thing, but only for five seconds, that's all I was going to give it.” As soon as those seconds are up, let yourself relax. One of the best methods to deal with social anxiety is by letting your doubts wash over you, but only temporarily. You can’t let your fear win forever.

2

Keep Keepsakes

Keep something on you that brings back good memories. Have a photograph of your last birthday or maybe even of your favorite celebrity? Keep the photo in your wallet, or simply set it as your phone’s background. If words speak louder to you, write a list of your best qualities and keep it somewhere safe. Whenever you’re feeling nervous, use it as a source of strength to make it through anything.

3

Dress to Impress

If you know you’re going to a party or event that you’ll be uncomfortable during, give yourself time to prep for it. If you wear something that gives you confidence, your anxiety level will drop. It’s cliche, but when you look good, you feel good. Appearances aren’t everything, but your body impacts your mind. You might as well dress well, because even if the night goes horribly, you can at least say your outfit was cute.

4

Everyone Understands

You might feel anxious because you’re worried about doing or saying the wrong thing. It’s always possible that you’re going to do something you regret. However, everyone is in the same position. Even the most gorgeous, popular celebrities have horror stories about their embarrassing moments. Remember that you aren’t alone in your fear.

5

Question Yourself

Ask yourself why you’re feeling so anxious. Are you worried that you aren’t wanted? Are you scared that someone will make fun of you? It’s important to realize why you’re so nervous. By getting to the root of the problem, you’ll be able to find a way to fix it.

Work Your Way up

If you’re terrified of speaking in front of people, start small. Get a group of friends or family members together and talk to them. Since you're more comfortable around them than strangers, you should have an easier time speaking. If that’s too difficult, start by speaking to yourself in a mirror. You can even tape record what you say and listen back to it. You’ll realize that you don’t sound nearly as bad as you think you do.

7

Internal Song

What song do you listen to when you’re upset? You won’t be able to hear it while talking to others, but you can sing the lyrics in your head. If they’re from your favorite song, you should know the words by heart. It’s a simple way to calm yourself down, and it doesn’t take much work.

Everyone’s suffered through uncomfortable social situations. Do you get nervous around large groups of people? What helps you calm down?
