10 Critical Things You Should Not Tolerate ...

Undoubtedly you can and do put up with a lot, but there are just some things you should not tolerate. It’s not about being bolshy or obnoxious, or just plain unreasonable, it’s about what you need and want as a person, how you want to be treated and how you want to treat others in return. Let’s take a look at 10 things you should not tolerate.

1. No Communication

Personal relationships are the basis of everyday life, and healthy relationships are based on honest, supportive, non-judgmental and caring communication. Living with someone who refuses to communicate with you is one of the most important things you should not tolerate. Not acknowledging and communicating feelings leads to resentment and anger, which ultimately could result in a break down in the relationship permanently. Make the small changes that count and start sharing thoughts, ideas and feelings with the people in your life.

2. Disrespect

Respect costs absolutely nothing. Things like saying please and thank you, not cutting somebody off when they are talking, not humiliating or demoralizing anybody, standing up for women regardless of age, race or financial standing in life are all small things that are synonymous with respect. Take the time to greet the cashier warmly at the store, say thank you to your employees for a job well done, thank your partner for small things like helping you with the shopping and never ever treat anybody in your life with any less respect than you expect to be treated with yourself.

3. Unhealthy Habits

Bad lifestyle choices, smoking, excessive drinking, a diet consisting of processed, high fat junk food, absolutely no exercise and absolutely no personal pride in looking after yourself are all things that should not be tolerated. These bad habits are easy to slide into and before you know it they have started affecting every aspect of your life, your job and your personal relationships. Make the effort to be healthy, lose the extra weight, stop smoking and exercise regularly and the rest of your life will follow suit. Self-respect is one of the best gifts you can give yourself.

4. Clutter

Clutter in your home and your place of work are all things that are extensions of our emotional feelings. Clutter can make people feel incredibly claustrophobic, anxious and depressed, which is a vicious cycle that repeats itself over and over again. Living with someone else’s clutter is even worse! Make an effort for a clutter free living space.

5. Living a Joyless Existence

A balanced life is a happy life and part of having a balanced life is making time to enjoy the special times with friends and family, doing things you love and having a fulfilling social life. Working all the time, never going out, never leaving your office or seeing your friends will eventually have a negative effect on your life, leading to loneliness. Loneliness is one of the things you should not put up with.

6. Disorganization

Disorganization is one of those things you should never put up with. It has far reaching effects, making your soul feel anxious and disorientated – feelings that subconsciously start affecting other aspects of your life. When you are disorganized, you never know where anything is, are always surrounded by piles of mess and disorder, making you late, terribly stressed and zapped of energy.

7. Negativity

Negative people and negative self-talk are possibly the worst two combinations of influence that anybody can have in their life. Consistent negativity has a dripping tap effect and if you have a colleague, friend or family member that is always moaning, negative and complaining, it will end up draining you completely and having a direct impact on your life. Positive thoughts start with you – the time is now.

8. Unsupportive Relationships

An unsupportive relationship is most definitely one of the things you shouldn’t tolerate. Everybody needs a partner or a good friend that will nurture your feelings, dreams and hopes, encouraging and supporting you to do the best you can, and helping you when you feel drained or unsure of yourself. If your significant other, boss, sister, parent or friend is not supporting you – you need to change that, nobody needs to put up with people who don’t have their best interests at heart.

9. Long Traveling Hours

Everybody has been there and done it and some people are still doing it, but when you look back at your life, nobody thinks, ‘’Wow, I should have spent more time traveling to and from the office.’’ Precious hours that could be spent with friends and family – your children – are being spent commuting to and from work. In fact, the time some people spend traveling could be spent at night school, getting a degree or diploma that could have a significant impact on their earnings, but instead they choose to stay in a dead end job and travel 3 hours every day there and back. Food for thought.

10. Debt

The debt situation has affected everyone around the world, but being in serious debt, having credit card bills up to the roof and scraping for money are no way to live. And the amount of strain put on relationships and life in general when there is serious debt hanging over your head is one of the things you should not tolerate. Re-evaluate your budget, stop buying stuff you don’t need and cancel subscriptions and clothing accounts. The amount of stress that one is under because of debt from buying things society says you need is definitely not worth it.

Mostly, all these things you should not tolerate are well within your personal remit to address. Identify the ones that have the most negative influence on your well-being and tackle those first. Which do you think would make you happier if you made changes?

Where Thoughts and Opinions Converge

My goodness, Neecey, you must have been looking right into me when you made this list; it will definitely go to my "favorites", as a cautionary and constant reminder of the intolerable elements in my life! It's scary how just allowing one of these elements to work it's way into your life will lead to another, and another... Thank you for some very good welcome advice :)

Mothers-in-law should be on this list.

This article really had me thinking, Everything on this list applies to me. I need to start making changes ASAP.

I especially loved this one. I made a choice for 2013 to be all about a happier and healthier me. It took me a while to get into the swing of things such as eating healthy and exercising every day but I've been sticking with it for a good while now and I can honestly say that just daily exercise will do wonders. I have borderline personality disorder and have struggled with it for quite some time now. Exercise is better than any antidepressant or anti anxiety medicine I have ever been on. My self esteem is higher than it has ever been and I have become a much more happy and upbeat person. Just the small things like keeping a tidy and organized living space will boost your mood. Giving yourself a mani/pedi once a week can be so therapeutic. I recently started doing Yoga and it's amazing as well. I suppose next I will try to work on the whole debt issue lol.

I think I need to communicate more and stay positive
