In our everyday lives, it’s easy to get so busy that we neglect ourselves. Now, we’ll definitely take care of those around us, whether it be friends, family, and all those in between, but why is it so hard for us to take the time out to take care of ourselves?

Well, for some, it’s a mindset. Some people feel that doing things for yourself is an act of selfishness, but the reality is that self-care isn’t selfish at all. According to Psychology Today, self-care is an intentional and regular process of devoting yourself to establishing and maintaining a healthy mental state.

We live in an era where anxiety and stress are typical feelings that everyone has all the time, and burnout is the “new norm” for the average working adult. The truth of the matter is that none of these mental health conditions should be viewed as standard, nor is it a sustainable way to live your life. Yes, everyone encounters stress on a daily basis but the way you deal with stress is going to be the determining factor of the quality of life you live.

Some people turn to less than favorable methods of coping with everyday life stressors… But then again, there are those who turn to alternative forms of dealing with stress, and it comes in a form called self-care.

On the popular HBO series Insecure, Issa and Molly dedicated an entire day each week to the care and maintenance of their physical and mental health. On the show, they called it “Self-Care Sundays.” Now, the characters on the show had their own unique ways of tending to their physical and mental health that some may or may not agree with, nonetheless, you can’t deny the fact that the two characters were able to recognize that the state of their mental health was important and they made efforts to tend to it.

Now, it’s your turn to tend to your own self-care. Self-care can be whatever you want it to be and can come in many different forms. Everything from going to the spa to going for a run, your self-care can be whatever you want it to be as long as it caters to the improvement and betterment of your physical and mental health. Take a look at some easy ways to start incorporating self-care into your daily routine.

Go outside

Whether you’re the “outdoorsy” type or not, getting outside for at least 10 to 20 minutes a day can significantly improve your mood and state of mind without you even realizing it. A little fresh air and sunlight can do wonders for your day.

If you work in front of a computer all day, make it a point to take a few breaks throughout the day to get away from that screen by stepping outside. You can go for a little walk around your building; If you work from home, sit outside on your patio or porch for a 10-minute break and just enjoy the scenery of your neighborhood.

Save or Invest in Your Financial Future

Bills are one of the top stressors in most people’s lives, and it’s because your expenses outweigh the money you have coming in. You could always take on a second job and use that check to save or invest in a financial future that will create passive income for you later on.

Now, this is something that’s not going to happen overnight so you should treat it as such. You can start small by getting a piggy bank to keep at home and put your loose change there. You can also invest a percentage of your check into a savings account or into mutual funds. If you’re more handy, you can also start real estate investing as well, whether you opt for house hacking or invest in rental homes.

This may seem like more work than self-care but when it comes to your financial future, the things you do now are what’s going to allow you to live an easier life later on down the road.

If you’re like lots of people, exercising is a chore and you hate doing it… understandable. Despite exercising being a chore to you, there are actually fun ways to exercise, whether you’re wanting to lose weight or just maintain. And the thing about exercise is that it can be whatever you want it to be…

You don’t have to join a gym or run mile after mile. A simple walk after dinner or taking the stairs at work versus the elevator is a great start. By making small changes to your physical level of fitness, you’ll start feeling better and looking better as well.

Put Yourself on a Bed Schedule

A bed schedule sounds worse than what it is. Of course, you’re not a child that needs a bedtime per se, but as you get older and take on more responsibilities, your body is going to require more rest in order to complete the tasks of your daily routine.

Take things slow. If you usually don’t get in bed until 11:30 pm, try getting in bed at 11 pm for a week. You’ll inherently train yourself to handle your day more efficiently so that you can get to bed at 11. Decrease your bedtimes every couple of weeks and see how well you adjust.
