7 Health and Wellness Resolutions to Try in 2014 ...

This year, instead of making large, over arching New Year's resolutions, make these small health and wellness resolutions for an oh so healthy 2014. Like they always say, small changes really do lead to big results and when it comes to your health, it's no different. Instead of committing to a resolution too large, this year make smaller, more practical resolutions and you might just be surprised by your own success. Here are seven health and wellness resolutions that everyone should make in 2014.

1. 8-10 Cups of Water Daily

One of the first health and wellness resolutions that everyone should make is actually quite simple: we should all be drinking more water! Your body is made up of over 60% water and every single organ needs it for adequate function. Therefore, you can see how important it is to drink up - yet many of us still don't do it! Fill up a gallon of water and pour your glasses of water from it for a couple of days to see just how much water you are really drinking.

2. 5-9 Servings of Fruits and Veggies Daily

If I could wear a sign on my forehead everyday that said, "Fruits and veggies are the keys to life," I would. Fruits and vegetables are full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytonutrients that we cannot get anywhere else. If you don't like fruits and vegetables, please just listen to me one time: you have to learn to like them! Fruits and veggies are the most powerful form of medicine when it comes to fighting off disease, illness, cancer, etc. Eat up in 2014, my friends!

3. Exercise 5-7 Days per Week

Before you think I'm crazy for saying that, hear me out. No, I'm not saying resolve to hit the gym 5-7 days a week in 2014. All I'm saying is to do something active 5-7 days a week. Walk your dog, ride your bike, take a yoga class, anything, just move that body! Exercise helps keep your blood pumping and your body healthy!

4. Nix Soda

When it comes to soda, there is no room in a healthy diet for it. Full of sugar, high fructose corn syrup or artificial sweeteners, drinking soda is a habit we should all drop in 2014. I've seen many of my clients drop ten to twenty pounds just from giving up all forms of soda. I went cold turkey in 2007 and haven't looked back since! I am confident that you can do it too!

5. Nix Fried Foods

Like soda, there really isn't any room in the diet for deep fried foods either. Fried foods are high in unhealthy trans fats, unhealthy saturated fats and also in calories. Fried foods do nothing for your body and that is why I'm asking you to say adios to fried foods in 2014. It really becomes quite easy ordering grilled instead of fried, swapping those doughnuts for a healthy breakfast and swapping a healthier alternative for those French fries. Before too long your body will actually crave the healthier items!

6. Limit Red Meat to Less than Once per Week

As shown through several studies, the Mediterranean diet, a diet high in plant based foods, healthy fats and whole grains and low in red meat, is one of the healthiest diets in the world, if not the healthiest. Red meat is high in artery clogging saturated fat, leading to heart disease if consumed in excess for too long. By choosing to eat red meat less than once per week, you will be doing your heart ample favors in 2014!

7. One Sweet per Day at Less than 100 Calories

It's easy to let sweets get out of hand unless you have a plan and a boundary for each and every day. While it might sound restrictive, limiting your intake of sweets to less than 100 calories per day will help not only your waistline but your energy levels too! High in sugar, calories and often fat, while sweets might taste good at the time, they will only leave you feeling tired and sluggish shortly after! Plus, I'm not saying you have to give them up altogether, just enjoy a small amount in moderation. This way your body won't feel deprived, but it won't experience the negative effects either!

By following these health and wellness resolutions, 2014 could easily be your healthiest year yet! One healthy decision leads to another, so while many of these might not sound like a lot, they will do wonders for your health! Have you started thinking about 2014 resolutions yet?
