Teen angst may sound a bit of a joke amongst adults, but it’s no fun if you’re the teenager. It is important that teens have healthy ways to relax. It doesn’t matter what age you are, if you don’t find healthy ways to relax, you are either overwhelmed by your strife and worries making you surly, unproductive, and unhappy or, you turn to not so healthy ways to reduce stress. Fear not teenagers, check out these healthy ways to relax.
1. Have a Chat
A problem shared is a problem halved so they say, and they’re right. By discussing your problems with a friend, it can help reduce feelings of anxiety and help you find a solution to gain an overall positive outcome. If you don’t want to talk to a friend, then why not try talking to a relative, teacher, work colleague, or someone you feel you can confide in. Talking openly to somebody you trust is one of the best ways to relieve stress.
2. Have a Laugh
It’s a proven fact that laughing out loud reduces stress and can boost your immune system. It’s great to share funny moments amongst your family and friends. Watching a funny show on TV or reading a humorous book encourages you to engage in one of the easiest activities to help you relax.
3. Take a Deep Breath
A great relaxation tip to calm you down quickly is to take a few minutes to breathe in and out slowly. Try finding a quiet place, close your eyes, and imagine a happy place or memory, then focus on that scene. This will help slow down your heart rate and, in turn, help the rest of you feel de-stressed.
One of the fun ways to relax and enjoy yourself is to have a good old sing. It’s a fantastic way to relieve stress and tension and cheer you up by releasing endorphins. It can be a good opportunity to meet new people if you join a group, such as a choir. Of course, if that doesn’t take you fancy then why not entertain family and friends with your karaoke skills. If you’re too shy for either of those, grab your hairbrush or shower gel, turn up the music, and belt out your favorite tunes to your most appreciative audience – you!
Dancing is good stress relief, and is a healthy way to help combat stress related issues, such as depression and insomnia. Try putting on your favorite music and having a dance. Even classical music is well known for promoting relaxation and is one of the best ways to chill out. Just waltz with an imaginary partner round your bedroom.
6. Use Your Nose
Nice smelling toiletries are not just a ploy to get us to buy them. They do, in fact, contain specific scents, such as rosemary, lavender and sandalwood, which are proven to lower your production of stress hormones. A good tip to help you create a stress free environment is to grow your own lavender or rosemary, and use it as an air freshener in your bedroom. Lavender works particularly well to aid sleep and relaxation.
7. Work out
A beneficial way to relieve tension is with a workout. At times when you’re stressed out, you have a lot of nervous energy that you need to release. If you don’t release this stress it can lead to a number of health related problems, such as headaches, stomachaches and insomnia. Even just taking half an hour to go for a walk can help reduce stress levels and take your mind off things. Plus if you have a good workout in the day, you may feel more tired and relaxed by bedtime, enabling you to have a better night’s sleep.
8. Give Yoga a Go
Yoga has been around for thousands of years and is renowned for being a beneficial relaxation technique. Yoga has become very popular over recent years and you’re sure to find a class at your local community center or gym. By attending a class you may find it’s a good opportunity to meet new friends and find somebody to share a new hobby with. This focus can help you to achieve a healthy way to relax.
9. Find an Interest
We spend all day texting, surfing the web, and interacting through social media, so it’s no wonder that our mind is stressed out. Especially since we tend to use all these things alongside each other. It is very beneficial to health to find a hobby which we can concentrate solely on. These may include sports, reading, writing, photography or music.
10. Enjoy the Outdoors
Take some time to go outside and get some fresh air. Simple changes to your lifestyle, such as walking to school or work, to the shops and going to the park, can make such a difference and are all healthy ways to relax. Make the most of the sunshine, as this will help to boost your levels of vitamin D and improve overall health and well being.
The ways to relax aren’t just for teenagers. All of us can benefit when tension overwhelms and some de-stressing is needed.
