10 Hypoallergenic Dogs ...
By Marquitta • Apr 4, 2013

For you dog lovers who also suffer from pet allergies, consider buying or adopting hypoallergenic dogs! Although hypoallergenic doesn’t mean 100% allergy-free, it does make being around the dog much more bearable. Some people with only mild allergies may not get allergy symptoms at all around hypoallergenic dogs! If you’re crazy about dogs, but you’re also cursed with pet allergies like I am, you’ll appreciate the existence of the hypoallergenic dogs below!

1. Maltese

Oh my gosh! Maltese dogs are the cutest little hypoallergenic dogs ever! They have a smooth and silky white coat of hair and they barely shed. It’s important to keep this dog well groomed, or else its hair will mat. I never used to like these dogs, because of the tear staining, but when the owner cleans its face frequently, and cares for its hair, the Maltese can be amazingly beautiful.

2. Labradoodle

Labradoodles are a fairly new breed, and so far, studies have supported that it’s a hypoallergenic dog. They can have brown, black, tan, or white hair that sheds little to not at all. I’ve only seen one labradoodle puppy, and he was definitely a cutie! Labradoodles come in a variety of sizes: miniature, medium, and standard, which are perfect for all sorts of environments such as small apartments, townhouses, or even 5 bedroom homes!

3. Shih Tzu

Shih Tzu means "Little Lion" in Chinese. They are small dogs with a lot of attitude. Although they are hypoallergenic dogs, the Shih Tzu is extremely high maintenance when it comes to grooming. Daily brushing, weekly washing, and continuous checking for infections are very time consuming. Luckily the time you’d spend taking a larger dog out for exercise, can be used for grooming your Shih Tzu. They are not outside dogs, and they don’t require much exercise at all.

4. Portuguese Water Dog

You may have heard of the Portuguese Water Dog, Bo, Malia Obama’s dog. President Obama picked this dog because it’s considered to be a hypoallergenic dog, which barely sheds. The Obama’s haven’t thrown Bo out, so I assume his hair hasn’t been a problem for Malia’s allergies. Check out the Portuguese Water Dog at a pet shop and see how if your allergies can tolerate this dog.

What you choose to wear while working out can have a significant impact on your comfort and performance. One essential item is the sports bra. Lack of proper support can lead to discomfort and muscle tissue damage. Choosing a good sports bra can help prevent these problems and ensure a great workout!

5. Bichon Frisé

Bichons are similar to Maltese dogs with regard to grooming. They don’t shed, but keep an eye out for that tear staining! If you keep them clean and combed, you’ll be safe with a cheerful, easy-going, hypoallergenic companion!

6. Samoyed

Samoyeds are beautiful dogs! This is a breed that sheds A LOT, but many people with pet allergies don’t react to them because they don’t produce dander. Dander is the material that comes from most dogs that cause pet sufferers to sneeze, hack, and wheeze. If you don’t mind the shedding, your allergies and your Samoyed will get along fine!

7. Schnauzer

Schnauzers are hypoallergenic dogs with soft and fluffy hair that needs to be kept combed and brushed often. Whenever I see these dogs in pictures, I immediately think of a grandpa! They have fur around their mouths that resemble a grandfather’s beard. Much like the Labradoodle, the Schnauzer can be all different sizes: standard for people who live in bigger homes, medium sized dogs for smaller homes, and miniature dogs for apartment living.

8. Toy Poodle

Toy poodles would be great for allergy suffers however, you must be prepared to take really really good care of them. Toy Poodles are pretty fragile and prone to many genetic diseases if not cared for properly. If you are willing to care for these lovely dogs, you’re in store for lots of love from these cheerful, perky, and delightful cuties!

9. Yorkshire Terrier

I love Yorkies! They are so cute and polite! Every Yorkie I’ve seen has been playful, protective, and smart! Yorkshire Terriers don’t shed much at all and they don’t produce much dander, so people with pet allergies rarely have problems with these dogs. Yorkies are pretty high maintenance, but their company is well worth it!

10. Xoloitzcuintli

If your allergies are really bad, consider adopting a Hairless Xoloitzcuintli AKA Xolo. They are among the best dogs for people with pet allergies, because they don’t have hair! No shedding, no dander, no high maintenance washing and brushing, nothing dealing with hair! However, it is still important to keep their skin well groomed. Care for their skin as you would your own, which includes bathing, exfoliating, moisturizing, and keeping their skin safe from harmful sunrays! That doesn’t sound too hard!

I would probably be miserable if I knew that I could never cuddle up with a cute, fun-loving dog of my own. That’s why I’m so glad there are dogs that don’t upset my allergies! Do you know of any other dogs that are considered hypoallergenic? Which dogs work best with your allergies?

a coton de tulear is considered the best hypoallergenic dog out there. it is a small dog that is incredibly intelligent and is known as the "anti-depression dog" because of its happy personality!

SOOOOOO golden doodles and labradoodles are NOT AT ALL HYPOALLERGENIC ! What makes these breed? Well Mixing to breeds aka mutts(not a bad thing) but if you break that down is a lab hypoallergenic? Nope a Poodle may be but of u mix the two to get your "designer" aka mutt breed its doesn't make it hypoallergenic lol it just takes two dogs with their own separate problems and combines them! Smarten up

When all these designer doodles were starting to pop up because they were supposed to be " hypoallergenic " they were showing up in rescues and shelters. You know why? Allergies. Just because you are throwing in Poodles with Labs, Goldens and other breeds does not make them hypoallergenic.

@debra but a lab poodle does not make a hypoallergenic animal? Lol labs are far from hypoallergenic

I love my shih tzu to death , and yes the level of maintenance is high for this breed, if you plan to get one I suggest you get it trimmed with either the puppy cut or teddy bear cut so all you have to do is brush it daily and wash it weekly, this cut needs to be redone every 1 1/2 to 2 months, Shih tzu are such sweethearts and overtime they will grow this bond with you, but remember they are a small dog breed so if you don't raise them properly and show them dominance from their puppy stage they will over time try to manipulate you by thinking they're boss.

Have to say having a large labradoodle myself... The statement that they don't shed is actually a myth!! ... They shed... Lots!!

Shih Tzu's deal with tear staining. Sometimes that's the only part of my dog that gets dirty

I disagree with your point about small dogs not needing as much exercise as large dogs, all dogs need to be exercised regardless of size x

You didn't mention soft coated wheaten terriers! My dog is both non-shedding and hypoallergenic!
