Reasons to Shop are pretty easy to come by. You need groceries, holiday gifts, new clothes, a pair of shoes – the list goes on and on. But if you ever wanted to know the best reasons to shop to really make yourself feel better, I've got them for you. Now, don't mistake this as shallow. Retail therapy comes in all shapes and forms: you might feel better when you buy some new perform or sweaters, sure, but you might also feel buoyed when you go on a spending spree for other people or when you're buying groceries or housewares for your family. Whatever the case, here are several reasons to shop to make yourself feel better!

1

A Breakup

One of the best reasons to shop is a breakup. Even when they're amicable, it's depressing to breakup with your boyfriend or your girlfriend. Shopping then is actually practical, because it might be a good idea to replace some of the items you have that remind you of your now-ex.

2

A Divorce

Even more than a breakup, a divorce is a great reason for retail therapy. Again, it's practical, because there may be a lot of things you want to replace. You don't have to go credit card crazy, but this is a time to buy something that makes you happy, that makes you feel good about yourself.

3

A Fight

Ever have a fight with your partner or your BFF? That's one of my favorite reasons to shop, mainly because it's also one my favorite reasons to gorge on chocolate, and between the two, I'd rather make my wallet a little slimmer. It beats making my butt a little bigger. Often, actually, I end up buying something for the Better Half instead – at least, I do if I'm in the wrong!

4

A Bad Day

If you've just had a generally bad day, where you're stressed out and nothing seems to be going right, retail therapy can be a lifesaver. Again, there's no need to go crazy, but buying yourself some bubble bath, a pair of shoes, or even your favorite food can really make you feel better.

5

After You Get Fired

That goes double after you've lost a job. Granted, getting fired doesn't seem like one of the best reasons to shop because, naturally, you're out of a paycheck for the foreseeable future. However, if you can afford to take ten or twenty dollars to treat yourself to something, especially if it helps you relax, then go for it.

A Painful Period

If you've experienced the death of a loved one, a lot of stress, a broken bone, or anything like that, retail therapy might be right up your alley. This is another one of those periods where you might feel better by buying something for someone else. Remember, making someone else happy can lift your mood considerably.

7

After an Illness

If you've been sick with a cold, the flu, pneumonia, or something more serious, that's one of the best reasons to shop as well. When you're down and out and feeling weak, you need something to pick yourself up again. Even if you're only buying a new journal, a scarf, or the ingredients for a nice, hearty soup, it can make you feel better.

I can't help it, I love retail therapy, but it's nice to know that, quite often, there are legitimate reasons to shop. You don't have to go crazy and spend hundreds of dollars, let alone thousands. You don't have to buy a lot of stuff for yourself either. One of my favorite reasons to shop, for example, is to stock up on delicious ingredients – I like to release tension by cooking! You might like to shop for other reasons, and these are all situations where a little retail therapy can make you feel lots better. What are your favorite reasons to shop?
