1

Synthetic Ingredients

One of the reasons to stop taking so many supplements is they are often made with synthetic ingredients. Many vitamins and minerals are derived from substances that would shock you. For example, synthetic vitamin B1 is made from coal tar, ammonia, acetone, and hydrochloric acid. Not only are some of these ingredients toxic, but your body does not recognize these ingredients and doesn’t know what to do with them. As result, you do not get a lot of benefit from synthetically derived substances.

2

Fillers

When you take a supplement you are also taking the fillers that are in it. Fillers are put into supplements to add color, create coatings, or make production easier. Some of the fillers that are commonly used include artificial colors, magnesium stearate, and titanium dioxide. These are toxic substances, and if you take a lot of supplements, you can be putting quite a few unnecessary chemicals into your body.

3

Isolated Nutrients

Even if you take a whole-food-based supplement, the nutrients are isolated, and they do not do the same thing for your body as eating whole foods. For example, Dr. Rui Hai Liu led a research team that discovered the Vitamin C in an apple is 263 times more potent than Vitamin C in supplement form!

4

Vitamins and Minerals Work Together

Vitamins and minerals work together, and for them to work properly, they need to be in proportion to each other. When you take a lot of supplements, it is easy to throw the balance off. For example, taking calcium can decrease your body’s ability to absorb iron.

5

Variability in Absorption

Just because a supplement states that you are getting a certain amount of a nutrient, it doesn’t mean that is how much your body is actually absorbing. There are many different factors that can affect how much of a nutrient you absorb, which can result in as much as two fold difference in the amount that is being absorbed. Because of the variability of absorption, it is wise not to believe all of the claims that supplement manufacturers make.

Too Much of a Good Thing

With all of the health benefits that are emphasized about supplements, it can seem like a good idea to take mega doses. However, it is possible to overdose on supplements and cause health problems. Taking too much Vitamin A, for example, can result in headaches and even peeling skin. To avoid overdosing, it is best to limit the supplements you take and not mega dose.

7

Cost

While there are many health reasons not to take a lot of supplements, there are also financial reasons. Supplements are expensive, and taking a lot of them can be very costly. Rather than spend that money on supplements, it would be much wiser to use it for healthy food.

It is estimated that over 60 percent of Americans take at least one supplement. Although, supplements are needed at times, it is a good idea to talk to your doctor about which supplements are right for you. This way you are only taking what you need. Did you know you could take too much of a supplement?

Where Thoughts and Opinions Converge

My boyfriends' parents take a LOT of supplements and i worry that it's not doing them any good in the long run - the amount of pills being popped, powder, other whatnot being used is just scary! I think people need to make more of an effort to eat whole foods, supplements aren't everything

I've been doing that lately, buying tons of supplements! I showed my doctor the new product I bought that basically had all of what I was taking in one. She said try it and see how I feel. I'll start trying it in about a week because I'm on something else for 10 days. Anyone ever use GNC's Women's Ultra Mega Energy & Metabolism?
