7 Reasons You Should Have a Tea Party Today ...

By Ashley

Regardless of your age, there are several reasons you should have a tea party today - little girls aren't the only ones! Several studies suggest that drinking tea can be very beneficial for your health because of the disease fighting properties found within the leaves. Coming from the south, many people tend to think that the only tea that exists is sweet tea, but that isn’t so, my fellow GRITS! The harmful effects of the sugar found in sweet tea negate the benefits of the tea. Whether you enjoy green, black, oolong or any other kind of tea, drink up for good health! Here are 7 reasons you should have a tea party today!

Helps Fight Disease

One of the first reasons you should have a tea party today is because of its potential role in fighting disease. While some studies strongly support tea's role in improving health, others show little evidence; however, since tea is unlikely to harm you, it’s worth a sip for its potential benefits. Some studies suggest that the antioxidant polyphenols found in tea can aid in the prevention of the development and growth of many different forms of cancer. Other studies suggest that tea can also help prevent a stroke. Black tea in particular has been suggested to prevent osteoporosis as well. Drink up to help fight disease!

2

Can Aid in Weight Loss

Although there is very little evidence to suggest that EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), a property found in tea, can aid in weight loss, tea has been suggested to improve your body's ability to metabolize fat. The same polyphenols that I mentioned above can possibly increase your endurance while you are exercising by using fat to provide lasting energy. Since tea contains a little bit of caffeine, it can also help you go harder and longer during your workout, helping you push yourself a little bit further, thus burning more calories and fat.

3

Can Improve Memory

Feeling forgetful? One study in particular suggests that both green and black tea can help slow the rate at which your memory declines as you age. The key to obtaining this benefit might be in the actual amount of tea that you drink per week. In the study, the people that drank at least five cups of green or black tea per week showed a 30% slower rate of memory decline than those that did not drink any tea. Forget-me-not and remember what I said about drinking your tea all week long!

4

Can Boost Your Immune System

A strong immune system will help fight off not only a common cold but chronic diseases too! Green tea has been suggested to increase the cells in your body that help improve your immune function and suppress autoimmune disease. You can squeeze a little bit of lemon in your tea to add a splash of immune fighting vitamin C as well!

5

Can Aid in a Healthy Mouth

Although you might not believe this, tea can actually help prevent dental caries in your mouth; however, not sweet tea of course! Certain compounds found in tea can help prevent plaque from building up on your teeth and thus prevent dental caries. Tea is high in natural fluoride, which is known for its dental benefits. Tea also contains particular compounds that help fight and kill bacteria that might make its way into your mouth.

It Keeps You Warm during the Cold Months

When it’s cold outside, there is nothing better than a warm drink to heat your body from the inside out. During the winter months, I like to keep a pot of tea on the stove all day long. This way, when I feel a cold chill in the air, all I have to do is pour a warm glass to warm me right up. Since most herbal teas do not contain caffeine, you can feel good about drinking herbal tea all day long without feeling shaky from too much caffeine.

7

Aid in Sleep

Not all teas contain caffeine! Herbal teas like chamomile tea are great to drink at night before resting your head. Drinking chamomile tea before bed has been suggested to help relax your muscles and entire body, leading to a more restful night's sleep. If you ever struggle with falling or staying asleep at night, give this delicious tea a try!

In order to obtain some of these potential benefits, drink several cups of tea per day. Although much less than coffee, tea does contain a small amount of caffeine depending on the type of leaf, so be sure to stop drinking it in the early afternoon in order to ensure a restful night of sleep. Are you a tea drinker? If so, what kind of tea do you enjoy?
