The New Year always has us thinking up resolutions and new ways to stay healthy. Last year is done and dusted and New Year’s Eve already seems like a distant memory (that hangover, however – ouch!). It’s the time when we all make resolutions that will see us becoming fitter, healthier, and stronger in the New Year… for the first few weeks anyway! If you’re like me and tend to give up the health kick by Easter, then these simple ways to stay healthy in the New Year may be worth a look.
1. Swap It
A complete overhaul of your usual health routine can be a shock to the system. One of the best ways to stay healthy is to swap old habits for new ones. Start easing into healthier habits by swapping your usual guilty pleasure for healthier options. Swap processed snacks for fresh ones and try walking or cycling instead of driving your car for short distances.
2. Set Your Sleep Routine
Getting a decent amount of sleep each night can be an important factor for your health. More importantly, many experts suggest that setting up a regular sleep routine will help improve the quality of your sleep. Aim to go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time each morning to improve your body clock.
3. Activate Your Mind
Mental health is just as important as physical health. Boosting your brain function is a great way to stay healthy. Keeping an active mind doesn’t always mean learning new things or constantly testing yourself with crossword puzzles and Sudoku. Keeping your brain active can be as simple as socialising, doing the things you love, and just having fun.
4. Start Habits
Creating healthy habits can require a fair bit of patience. The general rule is that it takes repeating a task 16 to 21 times for it to become a habit. Start and keep track of your new habits by making to-do lists and setting up reminders. When you complete a task, check it off so you have a record of your achievements.
5. Stay Active
While participating in more high-intensity exercise is a great way to stay healthy, try adding more incidental activity into your daily routine this year. Things like taking the stairs instead of escalators or walking to places instead of driving can make a difference and are all great ways to incorporate more activity into your day.
6. Plan Ahead
Planning ahead is a great tip for keeping healthy habits. When grocery shopping, write a list and stick to it so that no sneaky spur of the moment purchases make their way into your shopping basket. When cooking, plan your meals for the week so you know what to cook each night. For exercising, planning ahead and writing down sessions in your calendar is a great visual reminder of your fitness routine.
7. Stay Positive
Stay on top of your healthy habits by keeping a positive frame of mind. Staying positive can be the key to starting and keeping healthy habits. Instead of focusing on how difficult your new routine may be, focus on how rewarding your new healthy lifestyle is. Use positive language and always try and frame things in a positive light.
Maintaining your healthy New Year’s resolutions doesn’t have to be so hard. A few simple and achievable goals are just some ways to stay on your game in the New Year. What tips do you have for staying happy and healthy in the New Year?
