1

Daily Affirmation

The road to learning how to be happy and healthy is right in front of you and it starts now. Begin your day with a positive affirmation about yourself. Set a positive tone for the day with wonderful, encouraging thoughts about yourself. Recognize your positive qualities or compliment yourself on a job well done. You are beautiful inside and out; recognize it daily and recognize the power of intention. Put out good vibes and expect nothing less for yourself for the rest of your day! You deserve it.

2

Healthy Friendships

A recent study by the Centre for Ageing Studies found that “good friends discourage unhealthy behaviors.” It also found that people with “a large network of friends outlived those with the fewest friends by 22%.” I like my space and alone time but I also like the company of great friends. Healthy friendships are a wonderful way to enhance your life. If you are lucky enough to have them, nurture them. They will take care of you – really!

3

Consume Less Electronic Media

I have a weakness for Law & Order. If I even hear the theme song, I’m hooked in for a marathon. It’s an awesome but time consuming habit. With so much electronic entertainment readily available, it is difficult to avoid any of it. Allow yourself a little down time and veg-out every now and then. Electronic media isn’t bad, but consuming too much of it can keep you from engaging in an active day!

4

Practice Moderation

I love croissants almost as much as I love Law & Order. The smell is intoxicating. And, like Law & Order, I will overload every time. There is nothing wrong with an indulgence every now and then, but moderation is best. It’s more important to use moderation with food, alcohol, media, and even exercise – moderation applies to all areas. Moderation is a healthier way to eat. It also spreads out the experience over time, keeping you from tiring of it too soon.

5

Reward Yourself!

Moderation is important but so are rewards or cheat days…or both! Really, it’s all about perspective. Practicing moderation makes rewards much more fun, and cheat days a little naughtier. Establish a goal and when you reach it, reward yourself! Or have a cheat day, enjoy it, and move on. If you have a cheat day, be sure to space them pretty far apart. It is a cheat after all. *wink*

Get out and Get Movin’!

Fall and winter in the southwest is my most favorite time of year. I love to grab my bike and take a nice ride every morning. No matter your climate, get out and get moving! Hike a trail or jog with a friend. If the weather is too harsh then hit the gym.

7

Laugh More

Happiness is all about perspective. Laugh more, smile more, and enjoy each new day and what it brings, as much as possible. Find a new video or spend time with your loved one. Allow yourself to enjoy a really good belly laugh. It has taken me a long time to feel comfortable enough to let go and really enjoy a good laugh. Now, when I find something truly funny, I let go and enjoy the chuckle!

8

Accept Yourself, Forget about the Rest

One of the healthiest things you can do to live well is accept yourself. Take a good look at yourself, love what you see, recognize and embrace your positive attributes. Quirks and all! The only opinion that truly matters about who you are is your own. I thought the line “you are responsible for your own happiness” was clichéd and used up. The truth is that it absolutely applies.

9

Drink More H2o

Drink more water! I can’t say that enough. I also don’t listen as much as I should. According to Discovery Fit & Health, the human body is approximately 70% water. Increasing your water intake is incredibly healthy, as water helps our cells regenerate and communicate with each other. It is also the best way to stay hydrated. Water is great for glowing skin too.

10

Eat More Fruits and Veggies

With so many artificial sugars widely and readily available, it is more important than ever to make the extra effort to eat well. Increase your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables. Whether you like your veggies roasted, grilled, or raw – the fresher, the better – your body deserves it. Prepackage them in snack sized portions to have on hand, ready to eat. You will satisfy hunger and increase your vitamin intake at the same time.

11

Annual Checkups

How is your health these days? That’s usually what the physician will ask at your exams. Keeping an eye on your physical health works best with the help of your doctor and dentist. An annual check with the doctor and six-month check with the dentist will keep you up to date on all of your internal changes. Coupling the results of these checkups with your own work will give you a full picture of your overall health.

12

Be Thankful

No matter how you are built or what the day brings your way, at the end of it you are still here. Be thankful for what you have and who you allow into your life. Each day I wake up, I’m thankful to be here, thankful for my family, my health, and Law & Order. Recognize your positive attributes as well as your areas that need work. Make a plan to address those in the days ahead, but meanwhile be thankful for what you have.

Being happy and healthy takes work. But if done the right way it won’t seem like work at all. Do you have any suggestions on how to be happy and healthy no matter your size? Please, share!

I love this article! It's really helpful in my life!

I don't agree with "cheat days". If you want a cookie or a piece of cake, or a greasy cheeseburger...eat it & move on. Cheat days can lead to a "binge" mentality. Otherwise good article!

I agree with Sara. I've tried the whole cheat day thing and it always makes me sick :(

I know that no matter how much weight i try to lose, i'm always going to have a big butt, legs and boobs. But i am petite so i have a small waist, short arms and legs, so you know what - I love my body just the way it is
