1

Word Association

When you need to know how to improve your memory, try using word association. Do you struggle to remember the names of people you've just met? If you meet someone who wears glasses, and their name is Gina, think of Gina's Gorgeous Glasses. Or if you need to remember that Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo, think of the Emperor pulling the toilet chain. The sillier the association, the easier it may be to remember.

2

Break It down

It's all very well having a list of numbers programmed in your phone, but what do you do if you lose your phone? Of course, you should have a back-up list somewhere, but there are times when it's useful to have a number memorised. A good way to do this is to break down the number into groups of digits. This also works with PIN and other numbers.

3

Repetition

This is another technique that helps for remembering names. When you meet a lot of people at the same time, it's difficult to remember what they're all called. Try repeating their name while you're talking to them. It's also useful if you're trying to learn a new practical skill - talk yourself through the steps as you work on them.

4

Acronyms

Acronyms are a good way of remembering a list (although it does help if some of the words begin with vowels!). So if you're trying to remember that you need to buy bread, milk, cheese, oranges and sausages, your acronym will be COMBS. This is also a useful memory aid for tests and exams.

Phrases

The reverse technique can also help you to remember, by expanding a word into a phrase. If you're trying to remember how to spell, say cynic, think of Choose Your Next Item Carefully. Phrases can also be used to remember other words; one of the best known (when I was young, at least!), is Many Valiant Explorers Make Journeys Sizing Up New Planets. This refers to Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Not only does this give you the name of the planets in our galaxy, but their order.

Games

You can also work towards improving your memory in general, as well remembering specific facts and details. The brain needs a workout just as much as the body does, so give it regular exercise. Do crosswords, Sudoku and other puzzles, and play word games. Learning another language is also brilliant brain exercise.

7

Food

Finally, include foods in your diet that help to boost your brain function. Nuts, seeds, whole grains, blackcurrants, blueberries, wild salmon (not the farmed version) and other oily fish, broccoli, sage and tomatoes are all foods that are good for your brain.

We have to remember so much information that it's no wonder we sometimes find it difficult, but with tips like these, you'll be able to recall what you need to know. Even the worst memories can be trained to retain facts and figures. How do you remember things?
