1

Use a Soft Brush

One of the most important toothbrush tips is about the choice of brush. It is recommended to use a soft toothbrush, rather than a medium or hard brush. While you might feel like a soft brush does not clean as well as a harder one, dentists have found that hard toothbrushes can damage the enamel on your teeth as well as irritating your gums.

2

Small Head, Long Handle

You want to make sure that your toothbrush has a small head, which is easily manoeuvrable, and a long handle which will allow you to reach all corners of your mouth. This is important, as if you use a large head you won’t be able to reach into the smaller parts of your mouth and therefore might find that you are not cleaning well enough.

3

Don’t Go Natural

This is one of those toothbrush tips that may surprise you. Although it may seem like a bad idea to use nylon bristles, they are actually better for your teeth due to their softer nature than natural bristles. Natural fibres are more likely to damage your teeth and gums, so stick to artificial toothbrushes.

4

Brushing Time

Make sure that you time how long you spend brushing your teeth. If you fall short of two minutes, you are not brushing well enough; aim for three minutes, but two should be the very minimum. You can use a smartphone app, a simple timer or even a favorite song on the radio to make sure that you are brushing for a reasonable length of time.

5

Dry Your Toothbrush

Another of the handy tips about toothbrushes is to make sure that you allow it to dry after brushing your teeth. Toothpaste contains many germ-killing properties, which stop harmful bacteria from living. If you do not allow your toothbrush to dry before using it, you may find that you are spreading tens of millions of bacteria back round your mouth when you brush.

Famous Quotes

To give oneself earnestly to the duties due to men, and, while respecting spiritual beings, to keep aloof from them, may be called wisdom.

6

Keep Your Toothbrush Clean

Another of the ways to look after your toothbrush is to clean it on a regular basis. If you use mouthwash, you can soak it overnight to kill off bacteria. Alternatively you can use alcohol, or even wash it under running boiling water for ten seconds. This will kill off the bacteria which are lurking on your brush.

7

3 Months then Bin!

One of the most important toothbrush tips is that it is essential to change your brush for a new one every three months. If the bristles become frayed, replace it even sooner; a new toothbrush is much more effective than an old, frayed one. It’s only a few dollars for a decent toothbrush, so changing it regularly won’t break the bank.

8

Have You Had a Cold?

The number of bacteria and germs which lurk on your toothbrush will multiply many times when you have had a cold or the flu. Replace your toothbrush or clean it overnight in alcohol to kill the additional germs off.

9

Keep It Away from the Toilet

If you keep your toothbrush in the bathroom (which most of us do), either keep the head covered or make sure that it is away from the dirtiest parts of the bathroom such as the toilet bowl. When you flush the toilet, bacteria are sent flying around the room; if they land on your toothbrush, you are spreading the bacteria to your mouth!

10

Multi-tasking Brushes

One of the handy toothbrush tips will be of interest to you recyclers! When your three months have expired, don’t throw your toothbrush away right off. Toothbrushes can be used for household cleaning in hard to reach places. In fact if it is in good enough condition, you can even use it to scrub the pores of your face; the bristles will ensure that you are exfoliating your skin.

These toothbrush tips are as simple as the tool itself, so should be easy enough to remember. They can also be applied in general to electronic toothbrushes. Do you prefer manual or electric?

Where Thoughts and Opinions Converge

I love this article. I follow everything in it but I didn't realize 3 months was the cutoff! I changed out brushes with dental visits every 6 mos. thanks for the heads up. I also use old brushes in the laundry room to scrub stains before putting clothes in the wash. Dip head in whatever stain remover you use along with detergent and since head is small and soft you use less and can control application better esp with those delicate items.

Love this! I'm OBSESSED with my teeth : D

A good thing to do is remember to shut the toilet lid before you flush...keep those germs where they belong!

@Heather Jensen any suggestions for how often to replace a toothbrush for a "hard" brusher? My hubby is an insanely hard brusher, you can give him a new toothbrush

Love this!

"small head long handle" made me laugh lol yes, I am immature

I wish my toothpaste had stars in it!

Read this article and right as I finished I went over and trashed my toothbrush ha. Thanks for the specific 3 mo to bin! Haven't found a clear time limit to keeping a toothbrush before this. Thanks!

I believe there was a Myth Busters episode about the toothbrush and toilet bowl.
