Cut Carbs and Caffeine

Your diet is a huge part of preventing a UTI so there are definitely foods that you want to avoid. Foods that are high in carbohydrates and sugar can cause spikes in your blood sugar and helps yeast to thrive in your body. Caffeinated drinks are also a no-no because they’re known to cause spikes in your blood sugar. Try to eat fresh, unprocessed foods as much as possible. They’re better for your health and won’t cause unwanted side effects!

Drink up

I think we’ve all heard the home remedy of drinking cranberry juice treat a UTI or to help relieve pain related to a UTI. Although it might sound like an old wives' tale, pure cranberry juice (not cranberry juice cocktail) actually does work to decrease symptoms of a UTI within 8 hours of drinking it! Another important tip to help prevent a UTI is to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Being dehydrated can stress out some of our organs, which can lower our immunity. Also, drinking water helps dilute urine to help flush out bacteria snf prevent a UTI from forming.

3

Front to Back

I know this next tip might sound a little personal, and it is, but it’s a sure way to prevent bacteria from spreading. Whenever you urinate or have a bowel movement, also wipe from the front to the back. Doing so will prevent bacteria from the anal area from spreading to the vaginal area. It might sound crazy but wiping the wrong way from the back to the front is actually one of the common causes of a UTI!

4

Baking Soda

Keep in mind that it’s always advisable to see a doctor if you think you have the symptoms of a UTI. But, one of the ways you can treat a mild UTI (symptoms lasting less than two days) is to add a teaspoon of baking soda to a glass of water to help decrease symptoms. Baking soda is said to help neutralize the acid in your urine, thereby helping to speed up your recovery.

5

Pineapple

Another way to treat the symptoms of a urinary tract infection is to eat pineapple. Pineapples are high in bromelain and vitamin C, which help fight infection and inflammation. According to Discovery Health, there was a study where people with a urinary tract infection were given bromelain with their antibiotics and got rid of their infection. Even if you’re on antibiotics for your UTI, it won’t hurt to add some juicy pineapple to help things along!

Empty out

Another important tip in preventing a UTI is to urinate right after sex. According to WebMD, doing this is the best way for women to protect themselves from a UTI because this prevents bacteria from moving into the urethra. So, after you do the deed, be sure to empty out your bladder. Drink some water while you’re at it so you can help flush out any bacteria!

7

Vitamin C

We previously mentioned vitamin C as one of the helpful nutrients in pineapple. Vitamin C helps keep your bladder healthy by acidifying the urine and assisting the body to keep bacteria out of the bladder. Discovery Health also mentions that some doctors prescribe 5,000 milligrams of vitamin C to patients with recurring UTIs. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends taking 500-1000 milligrams of vitamin C 1-2 times daily for immune support.

Remember that eating a healthy diet and having good personal hygiene are a large part of preventing a UTI. There are many thing we can do to help prevent UTIs from occurring, so be sure to take note of these tips! Do you have any tips on preventing or treating UTIs?
