1

Pragmatic

Starting again certainly isn't easy. Your life may have been turned upside down when a relationship you thought would last ended up falling apart. Adopting a pragmatic attitude can help – there is simply no alternative to getting on with life and building a new one for yourself.

2

Adaptable

Adaptability is a useful quality in this situation. Say you've split up with your partner and have to sell the house you love, where you expected to grow old together. There will be other houses. Be flexible and open to new possibilities. It's hard, but many of the best ways to start again are difficult.

3

Faith

Making a new start requires some faith in yourself and your ability to cope. It might seem almost impossible, but you can do it. You'll be proud of yourself when you look back. So believe that you can start again, however daunting it seems – you will get through.

4

New Location

Sometimes it's a good idea to make your new start in a new location. There can be too many painful memories associated with your old home. So moving to a different house or even a new city can help make the break with the past – just be sure that it is the right thing for you to do.

5

Been There before …

If you're wondering how to start again, think back – this is probably not a new experience. Life tends to be messy and unpredictable, rather than smooth. Things often don't work out as we expect. So look back and you'll realize you coped before – and if you managed then, you'll be just fine now.

6

Support

Look for whatever support you can find when starting again. You don't have to do it all alone. Friends and family are generally sympathetic (if they're not, then look for people who are). Talk to people when you need to, and don't be afraid to ask for practical help as well.

7

Recognize the Difficulty

When you're having to start again, don't feel you need to put a brave face on. You're facing a difficult period in your life, and you're entitled to feel scared. It's best to acknowledge your feelings; in time, things will get easier, but give yourself time to adjust.

8

Better Times Ahead

Making a new start may be tough, but you can be certain of one thing: life will improve. There may be a difficult stage to pass through, but it won't last. Eventually you'll adjust, start feeling better, and even enjoy your new life. So when you're feeling down, remember that there are better times ahead.

Starting again is certainly a challenge, and one that we don't always want to face. It's fine if you've chosen to begin a new life, but when it's happening because of events outside your control, things are much tougher. Still, there's no alternative to coping, so remember that you will get through, and may even become a stronger person. Have you any tips that have helped you learn how to start again?
