1

Drink Water

If there is one tip for beginning runners that I could pass along, it would be to drink plenty of water! There is nothing like getting dehydrated halfway through your run. If you live in a warmer climate, your chances of dehydration are even higher so drink that water! Avoid sodas and coffee and tea which will dehydrate you further. You can, however, sip on juice throughout the day to replace electrolytes your body will be burning on your run.

2

Start out Slow

If this is your first run ever, or if you have only been running a few months, don't expect to be able to run 10 miles overnight! Start out with a small goal, like a half mile, or one mile. From there, build up. And don't feel lazy if you have to alternate between walking and running. Listen to your body, and stop when it tells you to. Catch your breath, and then start up again. At the same time, learn when you CAN push yourself a little farther. You will never improve if you don't! That's a good tip for beginning runners to remember.

3

Stay Motivated

Just as with any other thing in life, running takes time to form a habit in. You must MAKE yourself stay motivated to get out there and do it. Even if you only commit 3-4 times a week, that's better than slacking off all together. On days you feel bored or tired, switch it up. Run a different route, or get a friend to go with you. You won't regret it!

4

Pick a Goal

Here's a tip for beginning runners to remember. One of the best ways to stay motivated to do your run is by picking a goal. For example, tell yourself you want to be able to run a 5k within 8 weeks. Or challenge yourself to be able to run for one hour straight without stopping by the end of the summer. By having a goal in mind, you will be able to focus and work harder to achieve it!

5

Invest in Appropriate Clothing

One of the top tips for beginning runners is to invest in appropriate clothing. Be prepared to spend around $100 on some good shoes. Good running shoes will prevent injuries and enable you to do better on your runs. Another area to throw down cash? Get yourself a good sports bra. You should spend around $30 in this department. This is necessary to cut down on bouncing and back pain, as well as look much better while you run. As for other running apparel, that is up to your preference. I prefer tank tops and running capris, but the choice is up to your level of comfort/modesty!

Eat Real Food

Don't learn this lesson the hard way. Running burns hundreds of calories, and you need to be fueling your body properly. You should be eating a balanced diet of fresh fruits and vegetables, protein, lean meats, whole wheats, whole grains, and vitamins. When it comes to fast foods, prepackaged items, junk foods, and processed foods, just say NO. Your body will thank you, and you will notice such a difference in your performance!

7

Be Safe

One of the tips for beginning runners I reinforce constantly, is the measure of safety awareness. Running alone as a women presents opportunities to be abducted, hurt, raped, or worse. Never run alone at night in an unknown area. Always tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return. If possible, carry a small knife (or other personal protection, if legal) and/or pepper spray with you. Try to run during daylight hours in well populated areas. Mix up your route to avoid being predictable. And always trust your instincts. If something doesn't feel right, it probably isn't.

8

Mix It up

I'd like to pass along this tip for beginning runners. It's easy to get bored, or just plain tired of running when you are first starting out. Here's how to avoid that. Mix up your workout routines. Run one day, the bike the next day. Go for a walk or jump rope. These various exercise will also help improve your run without leaving you feeling bored and tired all the time.

I hope that these Tips For Beginning Runners have inspired you to lace up your shoes and give this beautiful sport a try! I never thought that I could become a runner, it seemed impossible! But the more you stick with it, the stronger you will become. And the health benefits are amazing! Does anyone have a tip for beginning runners to share with us today?
