There are many factors which can add on those extra years as we grow older but fear not, there are some simple ways to rejuvenate your body and mind as you age. Life can take its toll on our body and mind and the contributing factors range from hormone changes to stress and a sedentary lifestyle. And although we may have only clocked-up a certain amount of biological years, these factors can actually add on more years, making us look and feel ten years older than we actually are. However, here are some ways to rejuvenate your body and mind, which will take years off you.

Avoid the Three ESsES

So, what are the 3 esses you need to avoid? They're smoking, stress and the sun. Bet you're breathing a sigh of relief! We all know that smoking is harmful and yes, it can be difficult to quit, but the reasons to give up far outweigh the reasons to light up! Smoking breaks down collagen and reduces the circulation to the skin, giving you a grey pallor. Stress has been linked to weight gain and other health problems and too much exposure to the sun is going to lead to wrinkles. So quit the cigs, cut down on the stress and slap on the sun protection. This is just one of the ways to rejuvenate your body and stop the clock.

Brain Food

Remember, we are what we eat and what we put in our stomachs can have a direct effect on our minds, so feeding your mind is essential. The Mediterranean diet has been linked with lowering the risk of dementia as has an increase in vitamin B intake. According to cardiologist, Dr Aseem Malhotra, "the evidence base for the Mediterranean diet in preventing all of the chronic diseases plaguing the western world is overwhelming." So stock up on the fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds!

3

Brain Gym

We all know how important it is to be physically active but our brains need a regular work out too. There has been a proliferation of brain training games over the past few years and although the jury is still out in terms of whether they actually have any effect and improve cognitive function, there are many other ways you can exercise your brain. For example, how about learning a new language or learning to play an instrument.

4

Try Something New

Being open to new experiences and having a youthful attitude is guaranteed to make you feel great. Step out of your comfort zone and try something new each week. This doesn't have to be anything particularly labour intensive but could be something as simple as trying out a new recipe or watching a film you wouldn't normally consider your 'cup of tea'. Of course, you may want to do something a little more radical and sign up to an evening class or a sky dive if you're feeling particularly adventurous!

5

Savvy Skincare

Finding the right skincare will make you look and feel years younger. Cleansing and moisturizing is key, as is exfoliating regularly and treating yourself to a face mask. Use a serum at night containing retinoid as this has also been proven to be anti-aging. According to dermatologist Elizabeth Tanzi, MD, they are a powerful anti-aging ingredient. Also, think about skin supplements such as co-enzyme Q10, which has been credited with fighting wrinkles and be sure to boost your omega 3 intake.

Mixed up Social Circle

Take a minute to look at your social circle. Do you have friends from a range of professions and range of ages? Mixing with a range of people can make you feel

open-minded and keep you interested in life and all it has to offer. Mix things up a bit by throwing a party and inviting the neighbors or joining a local club.

7

Volunteer

This is another great way to feel amazing. Volunteering has so many benefits for both you and the community. Volunteering will introduce you to a range of people and make you feel as though you're making a valuable contribution to society, which has been proven to improve mental and physical health. According to researcher Hannah Schreier, of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, people who volunteer show an increase in empathy, altruistic behavior, mental health and cardiovascular health.

8

Stress Free

I know I added this in the 3 esses to avoid but it's so damaging that I felt I had to give it a whole paragraph of its own. Unfortunately, stress and weight gain are bedfellows. I know cutting down on stress is easier said than done because we all have very busy lives, but you are the most important person in the equation and remaining sane is so important, both for you and the people around you. Try to reduce stress by exercising and spending time on hobbies you enjoy.

9

Keep on Moving

And lastly, keep exercising. You should be exercising for at least 30 minutes at least five times a week. This doesn't mean you have to be sweating it out at the gym. There are so many ways to stay active. Go for a long brisk walk or bike ride in the great outdoors or join one of the many exercise classes in your area.

Remember, age ain't nothing but a number. What matters is how you feel inside and how this is reflected on the outside. Can you think of any other things which will keep both your body and mind super supple?
