Being a health and nutrition major, there are many health gurus to listen to that I’ve learned to appreciate as mentors throughout the years. These individuals aren’t just healthy eaters, but also smart in their advice and outlook on health, wellness, life, and on the mind, body and spirit connection. Check out my favorite advisers that have made a positive influence on me, and if you have any favorite health gurus to listen to of your own, feel free to share yours with me!
1. Dr. Andrew Weil, M.D
Andrew Weil is one of the most popular, classic health gurus to listen to, and I’m sure you’ve all heard of him respectively for this reason. I’m not a huge fan of modern medicine, but I love that many of today’s medical doctors are now turning to holistic health approaches before modern medicine, or to complement modern medicine. Dr. Weil has been a pioneer in the world of healthy living since he implements and advocates natural wellness, holistic healing, a plant-based diet and high-nutrient diet. He also promotes exercises like walking, yoga and tai-chi for mind and body health as well. Dr. Weil is primarily the one responsible for making the Mediterranean diet so popular and I love visiting his website to stay updated on his advice. You can visit Dr. Weil’s website at: drweil.com.
2. Natalia Rose
I first learned about the benefits of a raw food diet years ago, and though I don’t eat completely raw, Natalia Rose helped me learn I don’t have to. Natalia Rose is a certified nutritionist who promotes juicing, cleansing and eating clean, high-raw, whole foods. She does not promote dieting, counting calories or being 100% raw or 100% vegan. Natalia was the first person to introduce me to food combining, and it made a huge difference in my IBS symptoms, along with following her advice on avoiding too many sugars. I don’t cleanse or juice on a regular basis, but I love her mental principles behind eating. She embraces filling the body with light, love and nourishing foods that bring life and energy into the spirit, instead of drowning it with diet foods, fake foods, or poorly combined meals that drain our energy. Natalia developed her personal passion for nutrition after she dealt with diet fascinations and even disordered eating at points in her life. She has also written many books, all of which I recommend. You can visit her website here: detoxtheworld.com.
3. Dr. Oz, M.D
Of course Dr. Oz made my list of healthy gurus to listen to! Dr. Oz is just fabulous, in my opinion. It seems he always has some kind of new advice that is ground-breaking or trendy. While I don’t listen to everything he says or I would get overwhelmed, I do appreciate that he promotes eating a plant-based diet, and is even a vegetarian himself. Even though his show seems to promote many weight-loss trends, the baseline of his advice is simple: eat clean and eat smart. I particularly love that he conducted a list of his favorite 99 things to buy at the grocery store to help consumers eat smart and healthy. He is also popular for promoting yoga and exercise for mental and physical health. If you haven’t already seen his website, be sure to do yourself a favor and indulge in it here: doctoroz.com.
4. Jordan Rubin
Let me introduce you to one of the best health gurus out there who has been through it all when it comes to finding his way to health. Rubin’s journey into health started as a quest to improve his own health at age 19 when he became extremely ill after he developed Crohn’s Disease, weighing only 104 pounds at his lowest weight. He sought the help of natural healing specialists in California, where he was directed to try a biblical-based diet based off of raw foods, organically grown whole grains, fruits, vegetables, fermented dairy, grass-fed beef and poultry, along with wild-caught fish. Jordan saw his health dramatically turn around and he devoted his life to sharing his knowledge with others. Jordan is the author behind the book The Maker's Diet, which topped the New York Times bestseller list. He also developed his own company, which many of you probably know of, called Garden of Life. Garden of Life is one of my favorite companies that offers raw, plant-based, whole foods vitamins, supplements and super-foods. You can find out more about Jordan at jordanrubin.com and you can visit Garden of Life, Jordan’s company, at gardenoflife.com.
5. Dr. Mercola, M.D
Dr. Mercola has been deemed as a game changer in the world of health, nutrition and modern medicine. He first became popular when he was a part of a team of medical professionals who founded the first online national database for finding kidney transplant recipients. He has since written many books and has his own supplement line. I value his advice because he doesn’t promote a diet, but instead focuses on eating for heart health, immunity, blood sugar regulation and for our optimal weight. Dr. Mercola’s blog is one of my favorite go-to websites to read up on medical research, and get good advice. You can find out more about him here: mercola.com.
6. Dr. Mark Hyman, M.D
Mark Hyman is the author of The Blood Sugar Solution, and one of the top medical doctors that I follow today. He has been a pioneer in the world of finding food, diet and exercise solutions to diabetes, and has solid advice overall, that anyone could follow to live a healthy life. Dr. Hyman promotes eating lean protein whether you’re vegan or not, eating tons of green leafy vegetables, moderate servings of low-glycemic fruits and moderate servings of healthy fats. He doesn’t promote processed food like any good health guru shouldn’t, and he also promotes avoiding stimulants like coffee and chocolate. I am still keeping my cup of coffee and 100% dark chocolate, but overall, I love Dr. Hyman! You can find out more about him and his book here: drhyman.com.
7. Dr. Joel Fuhrman, M.D
Dr. Joel Fuhrman is the doctor who made eating nutrient dense popular, healthy and fun. He is known as the promoter behind the “nutritarian diet,” which promotes eating nutrient dense instead of focusing on food groups like carbs, proteins and fat. Dr. Fuhrman eats a plant-based diet, and is mostly vegetarian. I love his recipes and his advice because he is a perfect example of what eating clean should look like. He also has my theory behind eating nutrient dense, which is that the body will automatically sense it is full when it gets the right nutrients. When our body doesn’t get the right nutrients, we’ll continue to eat more, even if we’ve had plenty to eat. Dr. Fuhrman’s latest book, Eat to Live, also made The New York Times bestseller list, and he has been featured on Dr. Oz’s show many times. You can learn more about Dr. Fuhrman and even get great meal ideas at his website here: drfuhrman.com.
