8 Healthy Late Night Alternatives to Junk Food ...
By Kelly

As a college student, I am all about late night eating. Whether it is a night of studying or partying, late night eating is sometimes the pick me up I need. But just because you want a late night snack doesn’t mean you have to stuff your face with fast food and unhealthy junk food. Try some of these alternatives for some guilt free snack time.

1. Eggs

Eggs are a great source of protein and will fill you up without giving you that bloated feeling. I personally LOVE scrambled eggs with some low fat cheese, spinach, and onions. One of the great things about eggs is that you can mix in some healthy veggies and some protein rich meats like turkey bacon. 1 large egg only has about 70 calories and 6 grams of protein, which will fill you up fast. For an extra health benefit, try egg whites instead. With only 16 calories for 1 large egg, you’ll be eating happy and healthy.

2. McDonalds Kiddie Sized Ice Cream Cone

For all those out there with an insatiable sweet tooth, head over to McDonalds for a yummy kiddie sized ice cream. As shocking as it is, a kiddie cone at McDonalds has only 45 calories and 1.5 grams of fat. While it may not provide any nutritional value, it is definitely a great alternative to other ice cream brands that are high in sugar, fat, and calories.

3. Special K Chocolaty Delight

This one is also for those sweets lovers. Special K Chocolaty Delight is a great late night snack because it combines the benefits of fiber and whole grain with the sweet taste of chocolate. Each serving of Special K has about 120 calories and only 2 grams of fat, making it a perfect late night snack for those who want a dose of sweetness with health benefits.

4. Cheese Quesadilla

Cheese quesadillas don’t sound like the epitome of a health food, but if you make them the right way they aren't that bad for you. Use low fat and low calorie cheese with a whole wheat tortilla, and pass on buttering it up to reduce the fat of your delicious quesadilla. You can even add in some veggies like peppers to spice things up a bit.

What you choose to wear while working out can have a significant impact on your comfort and performance. One essential item is the sports bra. Lack of proper support can lead to discomfort and muscle tissue damage. Choosing a good sports bra can help prevent these problems and ensure a great workout!

5. Popcorn

Popcorn probably makes you think butter and salt and overall unhealthy things. But popcorn doesn’t have to be super unhealthy. Rather than smother your popcorn in butter and other fatty toppings, pour some olive oil over it. Although olive oil is high in fat, it is a monounsaturated fat, which is considered a healthy and necessary fat. It tastes just as good, if not better, than pouring butter over popcorn, and it is much better for you.

6. Taco Bell Fresco Crunchy Taco

What would late night eating be without Taco Bell. But while fatty and unhealthy foods might come to mind when you think of Taco Bell, try their Fresco Crunchy Taco to banish that idea. With only 140 calories and 2 grams of fat, it is the perfect alternative to those Enchiladas and Nacho Supremes. And the beef, lettuce, and salsa combo will leave you completely satisfied.

7. Greek Yogurt

If there is one delicious way to get protein, Greek Yogurt is it. Chobani Greek Yogurt comes in tons of delicious and fruity flavors. Each container has around 100 to 140 calories and about 14 grams of protein, leaving you feeling full and satisfied. And with all of them being either low fat or non fat, you can feel guilt-free while you indulge.

8. Hamburger

So normally a hamburger is not on a list of healthy foods. But if you pick the right kind of hamburger and limit the condiments and toppings, they are actually not as bad as you think. A plain hamburger at McDonalds with no mustard or mayo and no cheese is around 260 calories. And a Wendy’s Jr. Hamburger is around 280 calories. While these shouldn’t be the first late night snack you turn to, if you just need a hamburger or you’ll die, try these options instead of pilling on cheese and condiments.

Do you like these late night foods? What are your healthy late night options? Do you prefer homemade or fast food for late night snacking?
