For dog lovers who also suffer from pet allergies, the dream of owning a furry companion can feel out of reach. However, hypoallergenic dogs offer a wonderful solution. While "hypoallergenic" doesn’t mean 100% allergy-free, these breeds produce significantly less dander and shed much less than others, making them far more bearable for allergy sufferers. If you have mild allergies, you might even find you have no symptoms at all! If you're passionate about pups but cursed with allergies, you'll appreciate the incredible breeds listed below.
Before we dive in, it's helpful to understand how to manage common allergy symptoms in your daily life. Combining the right breed with a clean home environment is the key to success.

1. Maltese
Maltese dogs are among the most charming hypoallergenic breeds available. They possess a smooth, silky white coat that barely sheds, which is a major plus for anyone sensitive to pet hair. It is essential to keep this dog well-groomed to prevent matting. While some may worry about tear staining, consistent cleaning and proper hair care ensure the Maltese remains a beautiful and healthy companion.
2. Labradoodle
The Labradoodle is a popular crossbreed that has gained a reputation for being allergy-friendly. They typically have hair that ranges from brown and black to tan or white, with very little to no shedding. These dogs come in various sizes—miniature, medium, and standard—making them a perfect fit for any living situation, whether it's a cozy apartment or a large family home. If you're looking for more ways to maintain a healthy living space, check out our guide on how to keep your home clean with pets.
3. Shih Tzu
The name Shih Tzu translates to "Little Lion," and these dogs certainly live up to the title with their big personalities. While they are excellent hypoallergenic companions, they are relatively high-maintenance when it comes to grooming. Daily brushing and weekly bathing are necessary to keep their coats in top shape. However, because they don't require extensive outdoor exercise, you can use that extra time for their grooming routine instead.
4. Portuguese Water Dog
The Portuguese Water Dog gained significant fame as the breed of choice for the Obama family during their time in the White House. Chosen specifically for its hypoallergenic qualities and minimal shedding, this breed is a robust and intelligent choice for active families. You can learn more about their unique characteristics on the official AKC page.
What you choose to wear while working out can have a significant impact on your comfort and performance. One essential item is the sports bra. Lack of proper support can lead to discomfort and muscle tissue damage. Choosing a good sports bra can help prevent these problems and ensure a great workout!
5. Bichon Frisé
Bichons are similar to Maltese dogs in their grooming needs. They are famous for their non-shedding, fluffy white coats. As long as you stay on top of their grooming and keep an eye out for tear staining, you will have a cheerful, easy-going companion that won't trigger your allergies. They are widely considered one of the most resilient and happy breeds for indoor living.
6. Samoyed
Samoyeds are stunning dogs with a unique trait: while they shed quite a bit, many allergy sufferers don't react to them because they produce very little dander. Dander—the microscopic skin scales—is often the real culprit behind sneezing and wheezing. If you can handle the brushing required to manage their thick fur, a Samoyed could be a surprisingly great fit for your home.
7. Schnauzer
Schnauzers are distinguished hypoallergenic dogs with soft, fluffy hair that requires regular combing. Their iconic facial hair often gives them a dignified, almost "grandfatherly" look. Much like the Labradoodle, Schnauzers come in three distinct sizes: Miniature, Standard, and Giant. This versatility allows you to choose the perfect size for your specific home and lifestyle.
8. Toy Poodle
Toy Poodles are incredible for those with allergies, but they do require dedicated care. They can be somewhat fragile and are prone to certain genetic conditions if not properly managed. However, if you are willing to provide the love and attention they need, you'll be rewarded with a perky, intelligent, and fiercely loyal friend.
9. Yorkshire Terrier
Yorkies are as smart and protective as they are cute. These small dogs produce very little dander and shed minimally, making them a top choice for allergy sufferers. While they do require a fair amount of maintenance to keep their long, silky hair from tangling, their delightful company makes every grooming session worth the effort.
10. Xoloitzcuintli
If your allergies are particularly severe, the hairless Xoloitzcuintli (or Xolo) might be your best bet. Because they have no hair, there is zero shedding and no trapped dander to worry about. However, their skin requires its own set of care: regular bathing, moisturizing, and protection from the sun are all essential to keep them healthy. It’s a different kind of maintenance, but one that is very manageable.
| Breed | Size | Maintenance Level | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | Maltese | Small | High | | Labradoodle | Varies | Medium | | Shih Tzu | Small | High | | Samoyed | Medium/Large | High (Shedding) | | Poodle | Small | Medium/High |
Choosing the right dog involves considering your specific sensitivity levels. Here is a quick list of what to look for when visiting a potential new pet:
Presence of dander (not just hair).
Shedding frequency.
Saliva triggers (some people react to dog saliva).
The dog's grooming requirements.
It would be heartbreaking to think that allergies could prevent someone from experiencing the joy of a dog's companionship. Thankfully, these breeds make it possible to have a fun-loving pet without the constant sneezing. Which of these hypoallergenic dogs is your favorite? Do you have experience with any other breeds that work well for your allergies?

Shih tzus are awesome! But they do require far more exercise than was said in this article. Also, shih tzus don't shed but they do kinda "blow there coat" every once in awhile. Little tufts of hair everywhere. :)

I disagree with your point about small dogs not needing as much exercise as large dogs, all dogs need to be exercised regardless of size x

When all these designer doodles were starting to pop up because they were supposed to be " hypoallergenic " they were showing up in rescues and shelters. You know why? Allergies. Just because you are throwing in Poodles with Labs, Goldens and other breeds does not make them hypoallergenic.
