For you dog lovers who also suffer from pet allergies, consider buying or adopting hypoallergenic dogs! Although hypoallergenic doesn’t mean 100% allergy-free, it does make being around the dog much more bearable. Some people with only mild allergies may not get allergy symptoms at all around hypoallergenic dogs! Oh my gosh! Maltese dogs are the cutest little hypoallergenic dogs ever! They have a smooth and silky white coat of hair and they barely shed. It’s important to keep this dog well groomed, or else its hair will mat. I never used to like these dogs, because of the tear staining, but when the owner cleans its face frequently, and cares for its hair, the Maltese can be amazingly beautiful.
Labradoodles are a fairly new breed, and so far, studies have supported that it’s a hypoallergenic dog. They can have brown, black, tan, or white hair that sheds little to not at all. I’ve only seen one labradoodle puppy, and he was definitely a cutie! Labradoodles come in a variety of sizes: miniature, medium, and standard, which are perfect for all sorts of environments such as small apartments, townhouses, or even 5 bedroom homes!
Shih Tzu means "Little Lion" in Chinese. They are small dogs with a lot of attitude. Although they are hypoallergenic dogs, the Shih Tzu is extremely high maintenance when it comes to grooming. Daily brushing, weekly washing, and continuous checking for infections are very time consuming. Luckily the time you’d spend taking a larger dog out for exercise, can be used for grooming your Shih Tzu. They are not outside dogs, and they don’t require much exercise at all.
You may have heard of the Portuguese Water Dog, Bo, Malia Obama’s dog. President Obama picked this dog because it’s considered to be a hypoallergenic dog, which barely sheds. The Obama’s haven’t thrown Bo out, so I assume his hair hasn’t been a problem for Malia’s allergies. Bichons are similar to Maltese dogs with regard to grooming. They don’t shed, but keep an eye out for that tear staining! If you keep them clean and combed, you’ll be safe with a cheerful, easy-going, hypoallergenic companion!
Samoyeds are beautiful dogs! This is a breed that sheds A LOT, but many people with pet allergies don’t react to them because they don’t produce dander. Dander is the material that comes from most dogs that cause pet sufferers to sneeze, hack, and wheeze. If you don’t mind the shedding, your allergies and your Samoyed will get along fine!
Schnauzers are hypoallergenic dogs with soft and fluffy hair that needs to be kept combed and brushed often. Whenever I see these dogs in pictures, I immediately think of a grandpa! They have fur around their mouths that resemble a grandfather’s beard. Much like the Labradoodle, the Schnauzer can be all different sizes: standard for people who live in bigger homes, medium sized dogs for smaller homes, and miniature dogs for apartment living.
Toy poodles would be great for allergy suffers however, you must be prepared to take really really good care of them. Toy Poodles are pretty fragile and prone to many genetic diseases if not cared for properly. I love Yorkies! They are so cute and polite! Every Yorkie I’ve seen has been playful, protective, and smart! Yorkshire Terriers don’t shed much at all and they don’t produce much dander, so people with pet allergies rarely have problems with these dogs. Yorkies are pretty high maintenance, but their company is well worth it!
If your allergies are really bad, consider adopting a Hairless Xoloitzcuintli AKA Xolo. They are among the best dogs for people with pet allergies, because they don’t have hair! No shedding, no dander, no high maintenance washing and brushing, nothing dealing with hair! However, it is still important to keep their skin well groomed. Care for their skin as you would your own, which includes bathing, exfoliating, moisturizing, and keeping their skin safe from harmful sunrays! That doesn’t sound too hard!
