1. Drink Lots of Water
Obviously, drinking water has lots of benefits for your body, skin, and overall wellbeing, but did you also know that it also helps with bad breath? That's right! Drinking more water is one of the best tips for sweet smelling breath. Try to drink at least 48 ounces of water a day and stay away from sodas, bottled iced teas and sports drinks because they are full of citric acid, which contributes to bad breath. It also wears away the enamel on your teeth. Drinking more water will keep your mouth lubricated, which keeps bacteria at a minimum, therefore cutting the stink.
2. Brush and Floss Every Day
Clearly, if you want to have fresh breath, you need to brush and floss regularly. For the best results, brush and floss once in the morning and once at night. Brushing helps to get the bacteria and plaque off your teeth, but flossing is absolutely necessary to get everything out that your toothbrush missed.
If you don’t floss regularly, food can end up getting stuck between your teeth which bacteria will feed on, which creates stinky breath.
3. Clean Your Tongue
Yes, you have to brush and floss, but don’t forget about your tongue! Brushing your tongue with your toothbrush or using a tongue scraper will remove bacteria, byproducts of bacteria, and plaque.
A mouthwash should not contain alcohol because it dries your mouth out, leading to more bacteria and more bad breath. A good mouthwash will keep your mouth moist, which helps to wash away odor causing bacteria. Zinc also helps to kill sulphur compounds that linger in the mouth. According to Dr. Glassman, a cosmetic dentist in New York City, you can easily create your own mouthwash with a tablespoon of baking soda, one cup of warm water and a few drops of essential peppermint oil.
