Everyone needs to know how to relax and how to recover after a long day at work. If you don’t take some time for yourself every once in a while, the stress will build up and you will soon feel worn out. Sometimes is not enough to reduce stress in your workplace, you need to do it when you get home too. Just like G.K. Chesterton said: “There is a great deal of difference between an eager man who wants to read a book, and a tired man who wants a book to read.”. A day at work can be very demanding and extremely challenging and you’ll need to find ways to recover to avid being overwhelmed by stress. Here are some very useful tips on how to recover after a long day at work that will help you relax and feel more energized.
1. Do Nothing
If you want to learn how to recover after a long day at work start simply. Lie down on your bed or on your couch and do nothing. You just need a few moments to relax and give your brain a rest. Don’t let the things around you distract you; just empty your mind and think of nothing! It's very similar to meditation, just that you don’t need to commit as much. You don’t need to do it for a very long time. 10 or 15 minutes will be more than enough and you’ll feel more relaxed and refreshed in no time.
2. Take a Bath
If doing nothing didn’t do that much for you then I’m sure a long and hot bath will do the trick. Just get in and lie down for at least 20 minutes and again think of nothing or try to only focus your attention on the positive things in your life. If you don’t have a bathtub, you could try taking a long shower instead.
3. Change into Comfortable Clothes
It’s extremely important to change into casual clothes when you get home after a long and difficult day at work to feel more comfortable and relaxed. Try not to stay in your work attire or your work uniform when you get home because it will only remind you of your job and you won’t forget about all those things that make you feel tense and drained. Just change into something like track pants and a jumper and even if it’s not very fashionable, the important things is to make you feel comfortable and refreshed.
4. Do Some Exercise
What better way to feel more relaxed after a long hard day at work then by doing some exercise? If you like running, you could go out for a run when you get home from work or you can even go for a long walk in the park. You could go for a bike ride, go to a gym, play a sport or do some Pilates - whatever you like and whatever makes you feel good, because any type of exercise will make you feel better and more energized after a long day at work.
5. Light Some Scented Candles
Another very effective thing you can do if you want to relax after a long day at work is to light some scented candles and enjoy their beautiful smell. My advice is to choose beeswax, soy or palm candles over petroleum and tallow ones, since they don’t emit poisonous fumes. They will help soothe your mind, feel more refreshed and more active after a long day at the office.
6. Play Some Soothing Music
What better way to relax than by playing some soothing music that will help you forget about all your worries and remind you of those beautiful things in your life that you tend to ignore so often. You could listen to some classical music or even to some nature sounds or whatever works best for you even if it’s rock, punk or house.
7. Do Something You Enjoy
You deserve to spend some time doing certain things you enjoy if you’ve had a long day at work.. You could read a few pages of your favorite book, watch a movie or even bake some cookies. Talk to someone close to you or just work on something you enjoy that isn’t too draining and you'll feel better in no time.
