1

Indulge Your Curiosity

One of the best tips for becoming more outgoing is to give into your curiosity. Learning about something new, whether it's a person, a group of people, or a particular subject, is actually a great way to make yourself more outgoing. Why? Because satisfying your thirst for knowledge naturally leaves you open to new experiences, new thoughts, and new emotions. It makes you more open minded as well, and that's a key aspect of being more extroverted and outgoing.

2

Come up with Questions

Asking questions is another important part of becoming more outgoing, because it's an extension of indulging your curiosity. If there's something you've always wanted to ask someone, think about it. Think about the things you've always know and the people who know something about them. If you're ready to ask, go right ahead. If not, you can get into a more secure comfort zone first, by following the rest of these tips!

3

Look People in the Eye

Making eye contact is so important. Not only does it show you're interested in what another person has to say, but it more or less forces you to engage more. When you're shy, it's easy to spend your time looking down at your hands or the top of a person's head. You might feel like that makes you more comfortable, but in reality, it enables you to be shy, to avoid any direction conversations or confrontations, and it keeps you from fully engaging.

4

Smile More

You can't help but feel happier and more engaging when you smile, which is why this is one of the best and simplest tips for becoming more outgoing. Having a smile on your face makes you feel more excited, but it also gives you a really welcoming, inviting air. As a result, people will be more open to you – and you'll be more open to others, as well! It's a win/win situation!

5

Practice Public Speaking

I can personally vouch that this is an excellent tip for becoming more outgoing. When I was at my most bashful, I felt most uncomfortable when talking to people I didn't know that well, especially when they were in a group. If you practice the fine art of public speaking, it really helps. You don't have to take a class, per se – although I did, and it was extremely beneficial! – but you can simply gather a group of friends and family with whom you're comfortable now and give it a try. As you work your way up, you can then talk to groups of colleagues or classmates, and see how you grow!

Create Talk Topics

This might sound lame, but it's actually extremely helpful. Make a list of things you enjoy discussing, things in which you're knowledgeable, and things about which you're curious. You don't necessarily have to carry it around with you and peek at it when you're talking to people, just use it as a guide. Try to remember a few items on your list, and resort to those topics when you're around an individual or a group you don't know very well.

7

Strike up Conversations

Here's the hard part, but while difficult, it's one of the most important tips for becoming more outgoing. You have to talk to people! It may well be difficult at first, I won't lie, but it will help. By no means do you have to strike up a conversation with a complete stranger, but I'm sure there are people you see every day – those people you kind of know, you smile at them sometimes, but you've never really talked to them. What better time to start?

8

Offer Compliments

Finally, when you're learning how to be more outgoing, complimenting others is a great way to start. You know how a compliment lights up your day? Why not do that for someone else? It's actually a great conversation opener, because the other person will probably want to talk to someone who's being so nice to them! Just don't be disingenuous – everyone has something terrific about them, you'll be able to find some aspect to really compliment!

I really hope these tips for becoming more outgoing are as helpful to you as they were to me. Remember, you can choose your own “outgoing-level,” so to speak. Be as out there as open as you want to be, because at the end of the day, it's all about your comfort level. Just remember the advantages waiting for you – you'll have an easier time meeting new people, making new friends, and doing more things. Becoming more outgoing can even help you with work and school. Do you have any other tips or techniques you'd like to share?
