1. What is It?
One of the most important facts about bacterial vaginosis is what it actually is. Bacterial vaginosis is an infection that arises when an imbalance occurs between the ‘good’ and ‘bad’ bacteria in your vagina. When too much bad is present to overpower the good, the pH levels go off and BV flourishes. The bacteria balance in your vagina is a delicate thing, so even the slightest change can cause a problem.
2. Why do You Get It?
The most common things in life that can alter a woman’s bacteria levels include extreme stress, unnecessary douching procedures and long-term use of antibiotics that can work to trigger an overgrowth of the bad bacteria that kick off the infection.
3. What Are the Symptoms?
The most common symptom of bacterial vaginosis are a prominent fishy, strong odour coming from your vagina, with secondary symptoms being a noted increase in discharge as well as feelings of itchiness in the affected area.
You need to visit the doctor in order to get a complete diagnosis. The diagnosis requires the completion of a pelvic exam, where some samples will be taken an examined under a microscope. The doctor will then be able to see whether the cells look like round discs dotted with pepper. If they are then it’s BV.

What you choose to wear while working out can have a significant impact on your comfort and performance. One essential item is the sports bra. Lack of proper support can lead to discomfort and muscle tissue damage. Choosing a good sports bra can help prevent these problems and ensure a great workout!
5. How is It Treated?
The good part about having BV is that it can be cured with one pill. The doctor will prescribe you something called metronidazole, which is an antibiotic specifically designed to readdress the bacteria balance in your vagina. A one-time dose of two grams of metronidazole is enough to completely rectify the problem - one tablet and the infection is gone!

6. How Can It Be Prevented?
Of course, the best relationship to have with bacterial vaginosis is no relationship at all! The unfortunate truth is that some of us are simply more susceptible to developing the infection than others, but there are things that you do to minimize your chance of having to deal with it. By far the easiest of these is to make sure that you eat yogurt on a regular basis, as it enhances the growth of the good bacteria that will keep your vagina happy and healthy and far away from the doctor’s office!
If in doubt, get it checked out.
