7 Good Habits That Will Improve Your Emotional Wellness ...

By Corina

In order to live a happy, fulfilled and meaningful life, your goal shouldn’t only be to maintain a good physical health, you should try to improve your emotional wellness as well. Your mental or emotional health actually refers to your overall psychological well-being and it includes “the way you feel about yourself, the quality of your relationships, and your ability to manage your feelings and deal with difficulties.” In order to be emotionally healthy, you need to be in control of your feelings and of your behavior. By taking care of your emotional health, you will learn how to build and protect a good self-esteem, how to have confidence in your abilities, how to recover from any setbacks and how to enjoy the little pleasures in life. Just like you have to work and do some sacrifices to maintain a good physical health, you should pay attention to your emotional health as well and you should also work hard to keep it in good shape. Here are a few good habits that will improve your emotional wellness that you should always consider:

1

Protect Your Self-Esteem

Among the habits that will improve your emotional wellness is building a good self-esteem and then protecting it. Learn how to not let yourself be influenced by all the bad things that happen around you and always be aware of how much you are worth and what a valuable person you are. Don’t be so hard on yourself and don’t be your own worst critic! If you don’t protect your self-esteem, you will become vulnerable to things like failure, rejection or anxiety and I’m sure you wouldn’t want that to happen. Practice self-compassion and allow your self-esteem to recover after a setback and this way, you will improve your emotional health.

2

Get Enough Rest

If you want to have a good emotional health, then you definitely need to get enough rest and that’s why you should sleep for at least 7 or 8 hours every night. Your body needs time to recover, so don’t overlook the importance of getting enough sleep, because this is a habit that will improve your emotional wellness and it’s also essential to your overall well-being.

3

Take Control after a Failure

Don’t be afraid to fail, because failure can actually be one of the best teachers you’ll ever have. Still, if such a thing happens (and it will eventually, because we are all humans and nobody’s perfect, we all make mistakes), then just take control after your failure and combat those feelings of helplessness and passivity. Don’t let them affect your motivation! Just like Guy Winch said, “Make a list of all the factors that are in your control such as effort, preparation, and planning, and give thought to how you can improve your execution of each of them.” Focus on your goals, don’t let yourself get discouraged and work on fulfilling all your dreams, no matter how impossible they might seem sometimes!

4

Avoid Obsessing over Negative Things!

I know this is a bit hard to accomplish sometimes, especially if you are a bit anxious and you tend to worry a lot, but it’s not impossible to succeed if you put a lot of work into it and if you have enough patience. Try to avoid obsessing over negative things. Distract yourself, focus your attention on something else and do something that will make you feel better and that will help you see things more clearly.

5

Recover Your Self-Worth after a Rejection

Sometimes, a rejection can seriously affect your self-worth. You shouldn’t allow it, though, and you should focus on your strengths instead. Everyone faces rejection at certain points in their life; you have to see what you can learn from that experience and just move on. Keep reminding yourself what a wonderful person you are, how many remarkable qualities you possess, think of all the things you have to offer and this way, you will surely ease your emotional pain and you will improve your mental health.

Find Meaning after a Loss

No matter how painful or traumatic a loss is, always try to find meaning in those events, in order to maintain a positive attitude and to improve your emotional wellness. Loss is a natural part of life and also, something no one can avoid. Try to gain a sense of appreciation and purpose and you will “gain strength from your memories rather than feel broken by them.” Make some positive changes in your life that will allow you to live your life according to your values and ideals and to make yourself feel happy. You will definitely feel much better and you will also improve your emotional health.

7

Exercise

I’m sure you are all aware of how many wonderful benefits exercising can bring you. Try to find some time in your busy schedule and exercise for at least half an hour every day, in order to feel healthier and to improve your mental health as well. Fight depression, anxiety and stress by adding this important activity to your daily routine and I’m sure you will feel better in no time.

These are in my opinion some of the best habits that will improve your emotional wellness. Do you have any other suggestions? Do you know any other habits that could improve our emotional well-being that we should acquire? Please share your thoughts with us in the comments section!
