Boosting your spirits can seem very difficult when you´re feeling down. What can you do to cheer yourself up, you wonder? Well, there are lots of simple ways to boost your spirits; they don´t take much effort and can easily be done. So if you want to put yourself in a brighter mood, here are some beautiful ways to boost your spirits …
1. Meditation
Meditation is one of the best ways to boost your spirits. Our negative moods are often caused by all the stresses and anxiety floating around our head. We worry about our jobs, money and family, which ends up making us feel bad. So take a meditation class or try a session at home – it calms your mind and helps you feel brighter.
2. Gentle Exercise
Another good method is to take some gentle exercise. Floating in a pool, practising yoga, or going for a walk are all excellent forms of gentle exercise that will help improve your mood. Avoid strenuous exercise, as that is likely to boost your adrenalin, which is good for your health and will make you feel better, but is not as relaxing!
3. Smiling
Have you ever been cheered up by a simple smile? Smiling is infectious, and if someone smiles at you it´s automatic to respond with one of your own. It´s often recommended that if you´re feeling down, you smile at yourself in the mirror. Try it it really does work!
4. Hugging
Giving and receiving a hug is one of the loveliest ways to boost your spirits. Scientists and doctors have acknowledged the importance of physical contact in maintaining our mental and physical health. It really does make you feel better – so hugging someone you care about is a great way of boosting your spirits.
5. Favourite Photo
A very simple way to get yourself out of a glum mood is to look at a favourite photo. We´ve all got hundreds stored on our computers. Look for one that reminds you of a great day with friends, someone you love, a beautiful scene or a pretty flower. You can even use it as your screensaver or desktop wallpaper – looking at this picture every day is bound to lift your spirits.
6. Happy Memories
Thinking over happy memories is also a great mood booster. It´s bound to make you smile (see point 3). Visualise those good times as clearly as you can, and remember how you felt at the time – the idea is to recapture that great feeling that you had on the day.
7. Plan Something Exciting
The routine of life can get rather depressing at times. So a great way of boosting your spirits is to plan something that will take you away from your routine. It could be a holiday, a day out, a trip to see a favourite band – anything that feels fresh and different.
8. Talk with a Loved One
Finally, what can make you feel better than chatting with a loved one? Distance needn´t be a problem – internet phone calls and video chats bring you much closer, and it need not even cost anything. Having a laugh and a gossip with someone you care about is bound to leave you feeling happy!
We all have “down” moments, but don´t let them take over; there are plenty of ways to boost your spirits. Making yourself feel better can be a very simple process, so find what works for you. What is your absolute favourite way of boosting your spirits when they need a helping hand?
