Are you looking for ways to shake up your chakras? Feeling like an emotional wreck for five of the seven days of the week and then too tired to care the other two? Well, one of the reasons you may be feeling drained and sensitive may be because your chakras are unbalanced and aren’t functioning at their optimum levels. I'll explain. Chakras (from the Sanskrit word for “wheel”) are the energy centers in our body, and according to alternative therapies documented by institutions like the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, realigning your energy centers can help rebalance the body and mind by avoiding ill health and maintaining emotional equilibrium. I know we’re all in need of ‘realignment’ at some stage in our lives! Each chakra vibrates at a certain color and corresponds to specific physical and emotional wellness aspects.

1. Root Chakra (Red)
This is at the base of the spine and is associated with trust and security. It is also associated with feeling grounded. If this chakra is unbalanced it can lead to constipation, apathy and weight issues. If you’re looking for ways to shake up your chakras, try introducing these simple daily grounding habits:
- Eat vibrant, nutrient-dense foods such as crisp red apples and beets.
- Get closer to nature by walking barefoot on the grass to physically ground yourself.
- Take slow, deep abdominal breaths to anchor your core energy.

2. Sacral Chakra (Orange)
This is just below the navel and is linked with sexuality and maternal instincts. If this chakra is unstable, you may be more susceptible to panic attacks and stomach bugs. Quiet meditation can help, as can pelvic movement exercises and orange-colored foods, like fresh oranges and sweet potatoes. When feeling overwhelmed, connecting back to your Root Chakra grounding techniques can help restore emotional stability.

3. Solar Plexus Chakra (Yellow)
This point is above the navel and is associated with ambition and self-awareness. Problems with your solar plexus include muscle tension and fatigue. Stay away from excessive stimulants like excess caffeine, which can exacerbate tension, and take up active practices that channel your nervous energy effectively, such as rhythmic boxing or dancing. Go on and shake what your mama gave ya… You’re right, I’ve never actually said that before in my life!

4. Heart Chakra (Green)
This point is linked to the heart and chest. It is associated with love, forgiveness and friendship. When your heart chakra is out of line, colds will become a recurrence, as will persistent fatigue. Ensure you consume immune-boosting green vegetables rich in vitamins and minerals. Also, make sure you treat yourself to regular massages. In other words, love yourself more! If physical fatigue persists, remember to balance this with Solar Plexus energy management to avoid burnout.

What you choose to wear while working out can have a significant impact on your comfort and performance. One essential item is the sports bra. Lack of proper support can lead to discomfort and muscle tissue damage. Choosing a good sports bra can help prevent these problems and ensure a great workout!
5. Throat Chakra (Blue)
This is located in your throat, neck, ears and shoulders, and is associated with creativity, communication and emotional expression. Problems with your throat chakra include a sore throat, stiff neck, and discomfort in your shoulders and arms. You can maintain a clear and healthy throat by drinking a warm, throat-soothing concoction of lemon, ginger, and raw honey in hot water. Avoid sitting at your desk for too long slouched over a computer screen, as poor posture directly impedes free flow of creative expression and causes physical strain.

6. Third Eye Chakra (Indigo)
This is located between the eyebrows and is associated with intuition, thought and dreams. Problems associated with an unbalanced third eye chakra are headaches, mood swings (an average Monday afternoon for me!), and vision issues. You can balance this chakra by staying hydrated with plenty of water, reducing heavy red meat consumption, and practicing mind-centering movements like gentle Tai Chi or dedicated yoga flows featured on Yoga Journal.

7. Crown Chakra (Violet)
As the name suggests, this is located at the top of the head. It is linked to happiness, consciousness, and spirituality. Problems with your crown chakra can lead to extreme fatigue, aimlessness, and self-doubt. Try dedicated mindfulness techniques or Third Eye mind-centering exercises to clear your mind, and consider professional life coaching to help focus your attention on what truly matters.
Treatment by a professional practitioner well-versed in the art of energy work often involves holistic methods such as crystal therapy, meditation, or certified sessions through the International Center for Reiki Training to help you feel balanced again. What kinds of things do you do to maintain equilibrium in this hectic world we live in?
