Now if I have any caffeine after 5PM I am wide awake until the wee hours of the morning.

Many parents need a bed time routine for their young children. The same set of events every night let the little ones know it is time to calm down and get into a sleepy mode. As adults we need this same healthy sleep habit. After dinner start winding down. Take a warm bath, read a book, or listen to relaxing music.Create some sort of nightly routine that helps you relax and get ready for bed.

Sometimes we have so much going on in our lives that we just need to clear our heads before bed. There are many ways to do this. You can keep a journal and write in it every night. If you are spiritual you can pray. You can also meditate and practice yoga to help relax and clear your thoughts.

The foods we eat can also have an effect on sleep. Eating right is a healthy sleep habit. Avoid highly acidic food in the evenings. These foods can cause heartburn and stomach issues that will keep you awake when you want to be sleeping.

Check with your doctor and pharmacist. Make sure you are taking your medications at the proper times. Some medications maybe part of the reason you aren’t sleeping at night. These medicines need to be taken in the morning and not at bedtime. If your medication is the problem even the best healthy sleep habits don’t stand a chance.
