What's your preferred type of vacation?

1. Unplug

How much time do you spend plugged into the computer, tv, or your phone? If you are being honest you probably tuned into at least one of the devices all day until bedtime. If this is you, it’s no surprise you cannot sleep because of stress. Try unplugging from the computer, phone and television at least an hour before bedtime.

2. Complete List

What can you do during that hour of no electronics before bedtime? How about going through a list of everything you have accomplished for that day. Looking at what you have done is far less stressful than thinking about all the things you still need to tackle.

3. Worry Time

If you cannot sleep because of stress you are probably lying in bed worrying about everything under the sun. Help yourself out by planning a time to worry and sort through problems earlier in the day. Maybe you can do this during your drive home from work or during an afternoon run.

4. Relax

If you find yourself unable to sleep because of stress try this relaxation tip. Start at your toes and imagine them relaxing and relieving any tension. Move up to your calves and do the same thing. Keep moving up your body relaxing each muscle one at a time until you have worked all the way up.

5. Don’t Panic

If you can’t sleep, then avoid sitting in bed count down all the time to sleep you are losing. If you cannot sleep because of stress use those waking hours to do something you enjoy. Read a book, write in a journal or listen to some calming music. The trick is to focus on an enjoyable activity instead of the loss of sleep. Chances are you will be drifting off in no time.

6. Naps

Sometimes a quick 30 minute nap during the day makes all the difference. Naps help relives stress. You wake up feeling renewed. If you can, try taking a quick nap after lunch.

7. Focus on the Good

If you find yourself stressing out and worried when you should be sleeping try thinking about all the good things in your life. If you are hashing out the negatives it’s no surprise you cannot sleep because of stress. Instead think of the good. You should start to relax and be able to fall asleep soon after.

Where Thoughts and Opinions Converge

It's hard to focus on the good when it seems like everything around you is falling apart. Some things you just can't not stress about. Illness in the family,(father with stage 4 cancer) school (homework and focus in class) friends (in huge arguments that leave me with no more friends) some things you just can't get away from.
