I struggle with getting a good night’s rest every night, so I am always on the lookout for ways to get more sleep. I know when I don’t get enough sleep my health suffers. I’m also not a pleasant person to be around. I hope to find some effective tips on getting more sleep here.
1. Turn off the TV
Don’t watch TV, work on the computer or play on your phone in bed. The bed is for sleeping and romancing so keep it electronic free. Those things stimulate the brain, which doesn’t work well when trying to wind down and fall asleep.
2. Avoid Caffeine
If you are looking for ways to get more sleep you may need to reconsider your coffee and soda habit. If you are loading up on caffeine throughout the day, but find yourself not being able to fall asleep at night then trying cutting back. Have your last cup o’joe at 2PM and see if sleeping is easier. If you are still struggling stop drinking at noon.
3. Relax to Music
Listening to relaxing music will help calm you down and get yourself ready for bed. Avoid the music that gets you pumped up and ready to party. You want soft melodies and soothing tones to promote sleep.
4. Bedtime Routine
Parents use bedtime routines to get their children ready for bed, but maybe this is something adults need to do as a way to get more sleep. A typical child’s bedtime routine may start with a bath after dinner, getting dressed for bed, a bedtime story and little relaxing one on one time with mom or dad. The same thing is done every night so the child knows that after the story is bedtime.
5. Get a New Pillow
It could be your lumpy pillow or shabby mattress that is keeping your from getting enough sleep. That was the case for my husband and I. For the last 10 years we have been sleeping on the same crappy mattress we bought when we had little cash as newly-weds. The thing sucked then and it never got any better. When we got a new mattress I instantly noticed a difference in how I felt the next morning. My husband even slept long enough that his alarm actually woke him up, before he was always awake from a stiff back 15 to 20 minutes before the alarm sounded.
6. Leave Work at Work
Work and stress can keep us from getting the sleep we need. Don’t lay in bed thinking about the problems at work. You are getting paid to mill over those problems while you are trying to sleep. Save it for in the morning. Again, the bed is a place for rest and romance. Leave your work at work, where it belongs.
7. Sleep Aid
If all else fails try a sleep aid. You can talk to your doctor about your sleep problems and get a prescription sleep aid. You can also try a natural sleep aid like Melatonin. Melatonin is easily purchased at your local drug store in the vitamin and mineral section.
I plan to try out many of these ways to get more sleep. Hopefully I will see a change and feel more rested. Do you plan on trying any of these tips? Let me know how it works out for you, or if you want to add your own suggestion of how to get more sleep.
