One of the best ways to beat bloat is to eat certain herbs and spices that get rid of bloating. In fact, popping pills and supplements can do more harm than good. Instead, boil a cup of warm water and let it cool for about a minute. Then stir in some of these herbs or spices, just a dash or so, and add a squeeze of lemon. In no time, your bloat will be banished, and you’ll be feeling great. Certain foods also help beat bloating, but if you can’t stomach a meal, try some simple herbs and spices that get rid of bloating instead. These are simple to find, and delicious at that!
Cloves are one of the best herbs and spices that get rid of bloating, and they are wonderful for treating nausea as well. Cloves can stimulate digestive fluids that help move food along through the body, and break down hard to digest foods like protein, fats, and starch. Add just a dash of ground cloves, or let a few whole cloves steep instead. As a bonus, cloves contain antiviral properties, along with powerful mood enhancing antioxidants.

Cinnamon helps to digest whatever food you eat, so adding it to your meals is a sure fire way to nix bloating in the bud where it begins- at your meal. However, it obviously doesn’t taste good on everything, so have it in a hot tea after dinner instead, or anytime of the day. It’s amazing at breakfast, by the way!
Lemongrass is a popular herb sold in the produce section. Chop up a few pieces and steep it in your tea. It decreases bloating, helps pass food along through the stomach faster, and it releases enzymes that help your body break down food.
This well known digestive aid is one not to leave out if you’re looking to beat the bloat. Bloating is often a result of indigestion, so in order to help your body digest your food better, ginger is a great answer. It contains special nutrients that help break down hard to digest foods like dense fats or protein, or eating too much at one time from any food. It also helps to combat inflammation as a bonus, which is great if you suffer from an acidic stomach. Lastly, ginger helps reduce nausea, and is a top travel aid for this reason. If your tummy is out of sorts, make sure to up your ginger intake. Use it dried or fresh, and even add it to juices, soups, entrees, and smoothies if you like.
One of my top favorite spices is cardamom. This uplifting, calming, sweet spice is so wonderful for your tummy. It helps food pass faster along through your stomach, and releases digestive enzymes that break down your food and help beat bloating. It also stimulates digestive juices that help pass food faster through your stomach. Did I mention it tastes like an absolute dream? Just one whiff of it is sure to send your mind into dreamland, let me tell you! It makes a fabulous tea, or you can use it in pancakes, muffins, smoothies, top fruit with it, yogurt, or even add it to oatmeal and rice.
I chew fennel seeds after almost every meal I eat, and this is a practice commonly used in other cultures as well. Fennel seeds help break down food in your stomach and help increase digestion speed. They also help to combat bloating quickly due to this. Fennel is a wonderful tea to drink during your menstrual cycle for this very reason also. It has a similar taste to licorice, with a more savory flavor. It’s commonly used in Italian cooking for its taste and digestive benefits. I like to use it in homemade soups and tomato sauces, and it really adds such a nice flavor that’s friendly on the tummy.
Caraway is another seed to be sure to include in your diet to combat bloating. It is amazing for releasing built up flatulence (gas), and helping pass food through the stomach quicker. It’s often used in Irish soda bread recipes, or with meat dishes. However, it makes a nice tea as well. Drink it after a meal, or include a few seeds in your next savory dish.
I love anise seeds! They are such a wonderful little seed to consume for good digestion and to beat bloating. Anise releases certain volatile oils that help break down food in you stomach and combat bloat quickly. They also freshen your breath! I like to chew them after a meal, or add them to sweet dishes. They have a licorice like taste, but are sweeter than fennel or caraway.
Peppermint is a commonly known herb to fight bloating, and it’s also one of the best. Peppermint helps to break down food in your stomach, combat nausea, and reduce bloating. It also enhances your mood, which can stimulate digestion, believe it or not. Peppermint also helps release digestive juices that pass food quickly along through your intestines. I like to drink it in a tea, but you can easily add a few pieces of mint to your smoothies, entrees, or salads if you like.
Chamomile is a flower that helps you sleep, but also calms the stomach. It is wonderful to drink at night before bed, after dinner, or anytime during the day when you’re stressed. Stress halts your digestion, increases bloating, and can induce nausea. Have a cup of chamomile tea to help you rest, and help you fight stress. You’ll notice immediate relief to your bloating and have a wonderful calming mood as a benefit.
